  • Also it says a lot how you made the jump from judging someone's poor judgement in feeding their kids to it being a problem because you feel entitled to be concerned about how people are spending "your" money.

I am entitled since I've been in their shoes and made different choices. Like I said...don't assume.

Yeah and I deal with people on assistance on a daily basis. I find it hard to believe they have the same education and understanding that you do. I also help them fill out and fax in paperwork since some of them have difficulty with literacy and speaking English. Based on seeing them dealing with the system I can only imagine the education they're provided with. I had to get state insurance to cover E 's NICU bill and the only education I was offered was how to falsify information in order to be sure I got maximum coverage at no cost and the recommendation to get free insurance for myself despite them knowing I already had excellent health insurance I wasn't personally paying for.

No, but seriously, smart people should breed more. I think you'd be justified, Mack, to have another for mere out numbering Jenelle's offspring.

Not all people who need assistance are uneducated or have limited English proficiency. There are plenty of families who, because of a crumbling economy, find themselves in foreclosure on their homes, unemployed and struggling to feed their kids. When I asked for help not too long ago, I was given packets, brochures, so, so many informative resources and someone came to my house to verbally explain everything to me. Guess we have had different experiences.

I guess my point was you have no way of knowing why they were buying what they were buying. Maybe they're lazy, maybe they don't always have time to cook, maybe they really like Chef Boyardee. Maybe they think that they're buying something healthyish and affordable because they have no way of knowing the best way to feed their family on a fixed income. I find it hard to believe the vast majority of people are like, F my kids health give those brats Spaghettios so I don't have to shop around or put any effort in.
  • My UO is that I think it's horrible how some gun owners think that requiring a background check for all gun owners is A BIG FREAKING DEAL and THE GOVERNMENT IS OUT TO GET US and OBAMA IS THE DEVIL. But 20 children dead in an elementary school is something they apparently got over in like 2 days. This is not directed as Papps, just the crazy NRA people in general who need a reality check IMO.

This. I'm not a gun person, but I recognize why some people are so passionate about their right to own guns for their protection or hunting purposes. I can understand why the idea of losing their right to bear arms would be upsetting. What I DON'T understand is how any form of gun control that is proposed has these gun owners freaking out. For god's sake were talking about background checks, getting rid of assault weapons, and making laws that prohibit people from building an arsenal cable of killing mass mounts of people in a short period of time. If you are a mentally stable, responsible, law abiding gun owner with nothing to hide then these proposed was should NOT be an issue with you.

I have a fb friend who was mad because New Jersey is talking about requiring gun owners to pass a mental health screening, and to prove that they are storing their weapons in a safe manner within ther homes.  How is that a bad thing?! Even if you are an advocate for gun ownership WHY wouldn't you want other gun owners to be mentally stable, and responsible for keeping their weapons out of reach of children?

I think kids should get more nutrition education in school.  Health class should include lessons on "here's how you cook a balanced meal for $5."

I think budget education should be a requirement in school, too. My DH had to take a "Senior Survival" class before graduating high school. I tease him about it but he learned how to balance a checkbook, iron a shirt, cook basic meals and sew on a button. It sounds stupid, but those are basic life skills people going out into the world need, whether they are college bound or not.

It always reminds me of the episode of Roseanne where she takes the home ec class to the grocery store to make meatloaf. Anyone? Anyone?

Roseanne reruns are on everyday on WE and some other channel. I have been watching occasionally. That was a great show and I definitely remember that episode, especially the part where she said she filled up the name brand box with the store-brand cereal.

THIS.   And for the record, I am an educated woman with a 6 figure salary.  I understand nutrition and try to eat healthy.  That being said, I love me some Beefaroni and even give it to Brooke sometimes.  Not an every day or week occurrence, but I do it.

I also love cheesesteaks, hot dogs, scrapple, boxed macaroni and cheese and numerous other processed foods.  I am not overweight.

I am a gun owner, and I agree that if you have nothing to hide, you should have nothing to fear as far as background checks, having to register your guns, etc. However, I do have a problem with some of the things being pushed for. One of the things I have concern with is what exactly what the governoment would define as an assault weapon. My hunting rifles and shotguns are the most practical for self defense, so I feel access to reasonable handguns is important, including semiautomatics. The second issue I have is the restriction on the number of rounds that a gun can hold. There is talk of limiting to 7 or 10 or similar numbers. I think that is a bit of a stretch to say that any more than that is high capacity. For the size of handgun I have, a standard gun holds a bit more than that, and mine holds on the higher end without an extention clip. I am certainly not saying anyone would have need for a clip to hold a ton, but the numbers that are being discussed are a bit unreasonable IMO. Also, a skilled gunman could easily switch a clip out in no time or even switch weapons, so I don't see how restricting the number of rounds would really be of much help in many situations.

I was going to let this go, but I can't help myself. I don't think that the bold above is logical. At all. That's like saying "I don't see how a seat belt could help you if you roll into the river and maybe almost drown because you have a seat belt, so why wear one?" or "I don't see how having a law limiting blood alcohol levels will keep drunks from driving, so why have the law for it?" or "I don't see how having laws making murdering someone illegal will keep someone from killing someone else, so why have the law for it?". All of those statements are valid points but are you saying that doing NOTHING is the better alternative than trying to put something in place to keep people from dying in car accidents, being murdered without any repercussions to the perpetrator, and finally that because someone can reload quickly or carry multiple weapons on them, we shouldn't bother trying to keep an insane civilian from having a large magazine to shoot with while going on a rampage potentially in the elementary school your child is attending? I just think it's insane that the idea that something won't prevent ALL gun violence is a retort for why we shouldn't try ANYTHING. A background check harms no one. A registry of gun sales harms no one. Limiting the number of bullets you can shoot without reloading your gun harms no one. Limiting the gun type you own harms no one - you still have other guns. But enacting all those things COULD SAVE SOMEONE. And that someone could be your baby while they are sitting in their kindergarten class. Because that's how fucked up this world is.

Sorry that a big UO. It's wasn't all directed at you personally - I have just had enough of Fox news lately LOL!

  • Oh and also, I don't care about what other people eat. It's just food.
  • Sorry, really wasn't trying to attack you. Left HugRight Hug
