Let's talk castor oil

I am overdue and feel like I have tried everything to ripen my cervix and encourage this baby into the world.

I only wanted to use castor oil as a last resort but I am nearing the end of my rope! I really want to avoid pitocin..which is currently scheduled for Wednesday.

If you have experience with it, was is successful? Unsuccessful? When did you take it (I'm only 1 cm)? What dosing did you use? I've gotten advice from 2 doulas and a herbalist, all had different dosing recommendations and one included vodka! WTF?

Re: Let's talk castor oil

  • It's just going to give you diarrhea.

  • I wouldn't bother.  I really don't think it's worth it.  I would reconsider your induction plans before attempting something like castor oil.  And also, A LOT can change quickly between now and next Weds, especially considering you're approaching 41 weeks.  The vast majority if women will go into labor on their own by 42 weeks.

This!  Most of what I've heard is that it gives you diarrhea, cramps (but related to the diarrhea, not labor), and often leads to dehydration.  Plus it tastes VILE.  Honestly, you couldn't pay me to take the stuff.

  • PLEASE don't do this!! Your baby will come when shes ready!
  • My dr. went over "almost proven" methods of naturally inducing labor and "totally unproven methods" at my appt this week....and she said the only thing castor oil is proven to do is make you "poop a lot".
  • Yeah, what everyone else says. My friend took it out of desperation and it just made her poop her pants. LITERALLY. And she still ended up having to induce.

  • No. It's about the only thing I would never, ever try.

Exactly. There is no way I would ever consider it.

  • I'm overdue too and I'd rather pitocin than castor oil. Castor oil doesn't soften your cervix it makes your digestive system cramp up and the contractions could spread to your uterus. But the diarrhea and intestinal distress wouldn't be worth it to me.  And it's not guaranteed, so to go through that for nothing?

    I just snorted.

Caster oil will make you miserable and you'll most likely still end up being induced only exhausted, crampy, and miserable while being induced. Don't do it. Talk to your MW/OB about safer more assured ways.

I think you're having trouble finding people with experience to reply to your post because most women aren't dumb enough to try something that causes abdominal cramping, pant-sh!tting and dehydration.

  • My sister used it and 7 hrs later she had her son in her arms. I tried it with my last LO and contractions started. Went to the hospital and after about 2 hrs they stopped and I wasn't progressing so they gave me fluid and sent me home. The taste wasn't that bad mixed with orange juice, the diarrhea wasn't as bad as I've had before I have IBS, but all in all it did not work. My water broke 2 days later though. I don't think it was related. Would I try it again to avoid pitocin? Yes even if it was unsuccessful. The potential side effects to baby are worst with pit than with caster oil. As long as you're prepared to go through having the runs and still potentially needing Pit. Good luck whatever direction u chose.
  • My MW uses black and blue cohosh, both as tablets and as a tincture, as a first method of induction. She said castor oil is their last resort, but between the two, it's always worked for her patients. She's never had to send a patient to the hospital for a chemical induction.

My dr recommended it today!  She said she did it herself and it worked. Before that I wasn't even considering it. I know we've all heard horror stories....

Why ask us for our experiences if you're planning on doing it anyhow like a moron? You've been told repeatedly that it will make you miserable and you'll be crapping yourself for 12 hours and even after all that you're more than likely not going into labor.

If you really want to take it, by all means, go for it. At this point, we'd all like you to take it.

Wow. Did someone forget to take their happy pill this morning? Where in this post did she say "I am going to take this"? Nowhere. She simply asked to experiences to see if it works! So on a happier note. I personally do not know of anyone that it has actually worked for. Good luck and keep your chin up. :

  • I did this with my first. I had been having irregular ctx and mixed 1tsp with food 3x during the day. I was admitted and had DS less than 24 hours later. My CS was cuz DS was almost 11 lbs with a huge head. Also I did not notice any change in my bowel movements.
