People who have more than one child are insane.

Agree.  I think it's a competition.  Sometimes I see people with multiple kids and think...I can do that too and then I realize I don't need to one-up anyone and someday I may be able to sleep through the night again.

Do you mean that you think other people are having more than one kid as a kind of competition?  Or that that's how your brain works at first, until you realize it isn't?  Because I highly doubt that most people who have more than one kid did it to one-up somebody else.

Also, about the Canadian health care system, I definitely think a lot depends on individual doctors (my mom and I stopped seeing one because he kept telling us that everything wrong with us was "in our heads" Confused rather than doing tests or making referrals and finding out what was wrong; our doctors since then have been great and proactive) and location (areas with bigger populations tend to take longer to get results, it seems, probably because the labs are backed up).

I judge the people I saw yesterday in the grocery store who were buying about 30 cans of chef boyardee for their 2 kids who looked about 5 and 7....and paying in food stamps. That crap is NOT food and solely reserved for late night munchies in a college dorm. Poor kids.

While I agree that this may not be the best nutritional choice, a family on a limited budget usually cannot afford healthier food in the quantities they may need.

i.e. They can probably feed their kids for 10 days on Chef Boyardee OR 5 days on something better.  It's a tough choice I'm glad I don't have to make.

I bought 4 apples yesterday and it costs me $5.39. My first thought was "Holy sh*t! No wonder poor people can't afford to eat fruits and veggies!"

If you shop around and buy a bag of apples vs a couple apples you can get them much cheaper. I pay less than that for a bag at Target. I live in a fairly HCOL area. Buying crap like macaroni and cheese is more expensive than fresh foods. The only thing is cost prohibitive but I buy it anyway is milk which is around $4 a gallon which only lasts us a few days. I may have a cart full of spaghettios and canned soup when its on sale but its still more expensive than I could make it myself. Even the dollar store sells bread, bagels, frozen and canned veggies, cheese slices, lunch meat. I even buy things like granola bars and nutri grain bars at the dollar store because they advertise them as being peanut and tree nut free.

I would bring it, but I'm too busy stuffing my face with a 10 piece chicken nugget and french fries from BK.

Welcome back LJ! Glad you came back :)

I have one.... I am beyond upset about this talk of taking away the 2nd ammendment. I know there is a lot of crap that has to go through in order for this to actually pass, but the thought of it makes me sick. I effing hate politics. HATE. (and I don't use that word lightly). I voted for Obama, and now I'm honestly taking it back. I'd impeach him if it came down to it. Disappointment doesn't begin to explain how I feel right now- not just about the gun topic.

How's that for a UO? Wink

OK i hope this does not come off as snarky BUT

     1. President Obama isn't talking about taking away the 2nd amendment. He is talking about adding further restrictions to gun ownership, including more stringent background checks, access to federal databases, restrictions on ammunition, etc. None of this is barred by the constitution IMO, and if it is the SCOTUS will overturn it anyway (if it ever gets made into a law, which is highly doubtful). But it isn't like he can just take away the 2nd amendment. There is no bill or proposed bill to delete the 2nd amendment and even if there was it can't be done without

    2. You can not impeach the President unless you happen to be an elected member of the House. Also, the President can only be impeached for committed high crimes or misdeamnors, neither of which the President is doing by proposing changes that he would like to make to our nations guns law. AND he wouldn't even be committing crime if congress passed a bill enacting those provisions and then signed off on it. Now, if he did somehow manage to delete an amendment (which is impossible) I guess he could be impeached, but again only the House cna do that not you. Oh and impeachment is just a trial, not removal.

ETA: The stupid gun lobby is too disgustingly powerful for any changes to be made anyway, so no need to worry. You can keep your precious guns.

I have another one: I am very annoyed with the Canadian health system compared to what I am used to in Germany. It seems to be a lot of reactive medicine. As in: oh, that here MAY be a problem, we will keep an eye on it and if it is still there in x amount of time we start looking at it. Doesn't happen at home. If something is off, we test the shiit out of it. Now. Not later. It bugs me and I hate it. I love my doc but I hate that I have to push for things and that I have to bring things up and all that. It makes me not trust him. And the worst? If is not just my doctor, it is any doctor i had to deal with here. So I assume it is the system they work in. And it sucks.

I know nothing about the Canadian system, but I'm loving the German one with thus pregnancy so far!

So, what did I miss between LJ and blu? I'm confused.

Also, Barack Obama's first profession was Lawyer and his second Constitutional Law Professor.  I'm pretty sure he would never even THINK he could repeal the 2nd amendment. Besides, to repeal an entire amendment, you need to create a new amendment and have it ratified.  It would never happen.  The only amendment to ever do such a thing was 21 the repeal of prohibition (18).

ETA: The stupid gun lobby is too disgustingly powerful for any changes to be made anyway, so no need to worry. You can keep your precious guns.

I should not have said taken away as in entirely void the amendment. I guess I mean more so infringing on the right to keep and bear arms. The way he is going about it makes me extremely nervous and is very upsetting.

Also, I didn't mean I would personally impeach him. I realize how it works Wink I feel like I would stand behind it if it happened though. I also realize both the above statements are very unlikely to happen, but I was just stating my upopular opinion :)

Lastly, nothing came off as snarky with the exception of your last comment about my "precious guns". Do I own guns? Yes. Is it the small chance that they can be taken away from me that is upsetting? No. It's the fact that IMHO I think the government no longer has it's people's best interests in mind.

Ha, sorry I knew that last comment was snarky. :)

I guess I don't get why he is giong about it the wrong way. He proposed some ideas in an EO. The majority of that stuff Congress has to then go about and introduce a bill on for anything to happen (except stuff like appt a director to ATF, which has to be confirmed by the senate). So, it isn't like he is trying to be sneaky or anything. He is just putting ideas out there and hoping congress does something about them, which they won't IMO becuase they are spineless pansies. I mean his EOs gave ideas such as improving the tracking of stolen guns? I don't get why this is a bad thing.

In fact if anyones behavior should be critized it should be the gun lobby who uses disgusting tactics to make sure even the mildest of gun legislation doesn't get passed.

I actually think the opposite of you that the governmetn DOES have its peoples best interests in mind by making these restrictions. The 2nd amendment is not a free for all. It doesn't mean that no one can ever make any restrictions on guns what so ever. The gov is doing the best it can do to help make sure that massive amounts of guns and ammo don't wind up in the wrong hands.

Smit and bees mama...I totally agree. Eating healthy costs big bucks and its sad. it's generally not an option for families on a budget. Growing up I was that family and I've been overweight for most of my life.

We weren't on food stamps growing up, but there were six kids on a nurse's salary. There were times checks wouldn't go through at the grocery store and we'd leave with nothing.

Yet, my parents still managed to give us a meat, potato, and veggie at almost every dinner.  We had cereal and canned biscuits at every breakfast (eggs if you wanted), and lunches were a sandwich with meat and butter and two Little Debbie snacks.

There is some truth that it is more expensive to eat healthier, but there are ways it can be done on a tight budget.

ETA: We weren't eating the healthiest food all the time, but they made sure our nutritional requirements were being met.

  • OK..  Here is my very unpopular opinion:

I am not bothered by the 2% Social Security Tax increase at all.  Yes it's less money in my pocket but... the only reason we had that EXTRA money was because of tax cuts made by Bush that were "supposed" to help the economy.

In the end, if my extra 2% goes on to ensure that our elderly have the income they need to survive, I'm cool with that.

In our house we call those gun hands, as in Edward Scissorhands, E Gunhands. There's even a little song that goes with it. Kind of like the US selling arms to Mexico, and many of those guns become "lost"? I do find it funny the State dept hasn't/won't release how many guns are approved for sale. It's known they get into the wrong hands!

Also, while I'll admit I should be more current on this....what I mean about going about the gun laws poorly was that I remember reading he was trying to bypass congress.

Well, yes I admit this was wrong. But we also armed the Taliban. And pretty much every other group that has turned against us. I mean I admit the entire way guns are sold/managed/tracked/not tracked in this country is a big old mess. We have a history (as a nation) of selling guns to very very bad people (and not only guns, tanks and what not).

Oh, he isn't trying to bypass Congress, he can't. He is the President not a dictactor. There was a lot of talk from pro-gun advocates that he was going to bypass congress and do all this unconstitutional stuff, but that obviously wasn't going to happen. Here is a link to what did happen. You can see his proposals are broken down into those that he can legally do and those that need congressional action. https://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jan/16/obama-executive-actions-gun-violence

Good times. I keep waiting for the magic moment when he gets over his tummy issues. I hope it is soon because if not i may shoot myself.

The siggy thing is a bump problem.

Wink

I agree. I hate that there have been so many shootings recently but I also hate that people are using it to their advantage to push their agenda.

Did you hear about the 3 six year olds who were expelled from school for playing cops and robbers because they brought "imaginary guns" to school.

And by imaginary guns, I mean this...

    image

People are seriously taking the anti-gun thing way too far.

I agree.  I honestly feel that people in this country who want a gun that badly can probably come up with a way to get one.  If I want a gun to keep myself safe from those people I should be able to have one assuming I pass the background checks.  That's really all.

In our house we call those gun hands, as in Edward Scissorhands, E Gunhands. There's even a little song that goes with it. E knows all about gun safety and we just a couple weeks ago were discussing how big he needed to be to go to our Uncles and shoot. Physically big I mean. I don't think all kids are mature enough to handle one.

Tell E not to do gun hands at school because he can now get kicked out for bringing a weapon.

I apologize for not deleting quotes but I'm on my phone and lazy. One of the many reasons he isn't in public school. Sure I have to remember not to say hell or God in front of the principal but he and his friend aren't going to be suspended because E calls him King Koopa and he told E he can't be in his club until he stops sucking his thumb. Cooper is a maniac and E getting thumb juice everywhere is gross. I wouldn't want him in my club either lol.

OK..

Same. I work in payroll and rolled my eyes at everyone who complained about their first check of the year. I took a cut, too, but I understand that it isn't just about me.

  • I judge LisaJay for mentioning that the family she saw paid in food stamps.

I'm sure they would still feed their kids shitty food if they had more money.

Lol that was my initial thought but I didn't want to get into a welfare/no skittles for poor people debate. I do think government assistance should come with nutrition education and information but I also think pediatricians should at least touch on caloric and dietary needs for kids.
  • I think kids should get more nutrition education in school.  Health class should include lessons on "here's how you cook a balanced meal for $5."

I think budget education should be a requirement in school, too. My DH had to take a "Senior Survival" class before graduating high school. I tease him about it but he learned how to balance a checkbook, iron a shirt, cook basic meals and sew on a button. It sounds stupid, but those are basic life skills people going out into the world need, whether they are college bound or not.

It always reminds me of the episode of Roseanne where she takes the home ec class to the grocery store to make meatloaf. Anyone? Anyone?

In our school that's covered under the Family Consumer Department. They are the ones with the kitchen and the food budget.

In Health we teach nutrition but we also have to cover sex Ed, substance abuse, fitness, mental health, stress, hygiene, communication skills, dating violence, and healthy relationships. Oh and we have to do it all in one semester! We really a bigger budget to bring health and physical education back into the schools.

I am totally jealous of my friends in Germany. Not only for the reason you stated, but because their childcare and their maternity leave rights....put America to shame.

I know!!! The other side is that half your income is gone before you ever touch it. But honestly, that is ok.

  • Mine is a judgement. I judge my SO's best friends ex girlfriend. She is a god awful bush. He worked really hard getting his doctorate and creating a business, awesome family guy, cute, super nice. Anyway, she was way younger than him and after a year...he wanted to settle down but realized she wasn't mature enough and he was looking for someone more mature. That was two years ago. Since then, she has been stalking him and going nuts. Yesterday I found out that dirty bush posted on a website, like a "beware, stay away from this guy/girl" website.... an article about him with all of these false claims....like that he was secretly gay, had STD's, did drugs, etc. She even found the worst pictures she could of him and posted pics. He is devastated and hired a lawyer but because it is an opinion forum, it's freedom of speech. But since he has an Indian name that is uncommon...if you search online for his business...the trash talking page comes up. She is on my FB and I cannot take her off without her freaking out and I don't want her coming after me or trying to ruin my existence. I just feel so awful for him right now and completely judge girls that do shiit like that. The relationship didnt work out...but it's been two years and she is with someone else. Get over it...don't go destroying the poor guys life!

Smit and bees mama...I totally agree. Eating healthy costs big bucks and its sad. it's generally not an option for families on a budget. Growing up I was that family and I've been overweight for most of my life.
I know what you guys are saying...I was more thinking you can buy 2 boxes of pasta for the cost of 1 can and feed your family for longer than the canned foods and it would be far healthier. Veggies and fruits are pricey but a family can eat healthier home made meals than pouring a can of spaghettios in a bowl and microwaving it.

I agree with that too. Every time they feed DS SpaghettiO's at daycare I cringe and I am not impressed. I don't want him eating that crap. I would prefer he eat something made from a package of spaghetti and a jar of Prego with a few veggies thrown in it. Chef Boyardee just tastes horrible too.

  • I'm totally judging my husband right now for being unable to acquire dinner on his own so now we're in the car with 2 screaming kids just so he wouldn't have to go through a drive thru by himself. Your free to Judge me for getting dinner from a drive thru. I'm tired.

I don't know what the problem would be with me staying the truth of what I saw. I judge you for really reaching in an attempt to judge me. Since we all contribute to the food stamp fund I have every righ to judge how someone is spending my money.

Because it has nothing to do with what they were buying.  You just judge them for two things - feeding their kids crap and being poor.

Trust me, it's not that much of a reach.

Well since you have been SAH you actually haven't been contributing to the "food stamp fund". Lets just say the portion YH pays in taxes goes to something you agree with and my families goes towards making sure those kids have something to eat regardless of what it is. How about worrying about how we can better educate people who lack resources and often education level to understand basic nutrition and assist those working multiple jobs who often don't have time to cook healthy meals for their families everyday and may have no other option but to purchase something their latch key kid can pop open and stick in the microwave since not everyone has the luxury of being home every night.
