For those who use cloth diapers

When you go out...do you just bring along a plastic grocery bag or something to put the soiled diapers in?  If you wait a couple of days to wash them....do the stains come out?  In the meantime...where do you put them so you can't smell them?  What are the inserts all about?

I really don't know anything about cloth diapers.  I am starting to research them now because I will have 3 babies and the cost of using disposable is just crazy.  I will end up spending about $240 a month on disposables...whereas if I just buy 60 (20 for each baby) cloth diapers it will cost me about $1100 initially but I'll make my money back after using them for 5 months.

Re: For those who use cloth diapers

  • You might wanna post this somewhere like Babies 0-6 Months. Many of us have not had babies yet.

I'm thinking about doing the same thing and have many of the same questions, so I'll be watching this post!

  • I know I messed up...I thought I posted it elsewhere....already reposted on other boards....thanks though.
  • This is definitely a good question for the Eco-Friendly Family board.  Those women have me 100% talked into CDing.
  • We CD my DD.

We have wetbags (bags made out of waterproof material) that we use to put the diapers in when they're dirty. We have small ones that are sent to daycare and put in the diaper bag and larger ones for at home.

We do the laundry every 2 days. They don't really have time to stink up the place in that amount of time. For the poopies you roll the solids into the toilet. If baby is BM-fed you don't have to do any rinsing of the poop diapers, as long as it's breastmilk only.

Inserts usually go with a pocket diaper. The diaper is the outside waterproof layer and the inside-against the skin layer together, The insert is the absorbant portion of the diaper. You can put more inserts in to make the diaper more absorbant.

There are a few girls on the Eco board that have GREAT info in their bios. Off hand LClaire would be the first that comes to mind

If you ahve any other questions, please let me know

Ditto....I use Bumgenius 3.0s and the inserts are inside the 'pocket' of the diapers. I use wetbags to carry them home/around in. I love them.

  • You can buy (or make) waterproof bags to put in your diaper bag, and you'll need a big one to use at home.

You should wash every couple of days, and the stains come out if you line dry in the sun.

Don't let them back up, smell shouldn't be a problem. Use a can with a lid.

Inserts are for extra absorbency when needed.

If you're crafty, you can make cloth diapers for a LOT cheaper than buying them new.  You can also buy used online (try craigslist or diaperswappers.com) .  I got a lifetime supply (for one baby) on CL for $180, everything included.

Check out punkinbutt.com or just google cloth diapers and do some reading.  It's not as bad as people make it out to be.
