Toddlers: 24 Months+

room sharing

I am just wondering on how exactly parents of two handle their kiddos sharing a room. I am due in May and DS will be 2.5. I know baby will sleep with us for a while, but will she wake him up at night once they are in the same room? Will he sleep in the morning if she wakes up early? How do your kids do it? What about nap time?

  • I'm curious too.

We are currently living in a 2 bedroom house and our DS has been in our room with us since birth (he's 10.5 months), and I am SO READY to get him out of our room.

We still have 5 months until our new house is ready, and I don't know how much more I can take.

My husband has to wake at 2:45am, so I can't let Liam cry-it-out at all. Therefore, he still wakes a gazillion times a night.

  • I have no idea. My DD is 7 and FI's DD is 3, when she is here for visitation, they share a room and it has taken a lot of adjustment.

As for having a newborn in the room, I grew up sharing one room with 4 younger siblings (we lived in a 2 br apartment) and we managed somehow. About every 2yrs my mom had another and the baby went straight into the "kids' room" with the rest of us.

    OMG too many tickers...

  • DS is still in our room and I'm not planning to move him until he STTN.  I'm really hoping that DD's excellent sleep habits rub off on him so there's not waking each other up all the time!

I honestly have no idea how it's going to work.  I'm just really hoping that I can move him out of our room before he outgrows the PNP.

  • My 18 month still sleeps in a toddler bed in our room.  I too have no idea how to start having them share a room.  Our master is downstairs, our 3 year old sleeps upstairs in her own room.  DD2 tends to just wake up crying loud in the middle of the night but goes back to sleep.  But she definitely wakes us up and Im worried my toddler would wake up as well if they share a room.  Nap time is a whole other logistics!

  • It definitely takes some time to adjust, but my girls have been sharing a room since August and it has gotten much better.  My youngest wakes up crying in the middle of the night and during nap times and it doesn't wake my older one up at a..

  • My step daughter is 11 and my DD is 2.5.  They've shared a room since just about day one.  Though, when DD was really tiny I'd have her sleep in the Pack n play in our room when SD was at home.  But around 3-4 months old we finally bit the bullet and just let them room together.  DD would wake in the night and I would go in there very quickly to swoop her up so she wouldn't have a chance to wake SD.  I'd take her in my room to feed/chang her if need be or go sit in the family room in the rocking chair and sooth her back to sleep.  In the mornings same thing, i'd just swoop in at the first sound and take DD out of the room.

It really worked out pretty well, with very few issues at all.

Now that they're older, DD's bedtime is naturally earlier than SD's, so we just put DD to bed, and then when it's time for SD to go to bed, we sneak in there quietly, kiss her goodnight, I check on DD and we sneak out.
