Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Any Suggestions

My LO will be eight months next week. She will not pick up food on her own. She will open her mouth and wait until I feed her. I have been working with her and teaching her.  She also will not drink out of a sippy cup on her own. If I hold it for her she will drink out of it. Any suggestions??

Re: Any Suggestions

  • DS is still getting the hang of a sippy cup. It seems to help when I tilt his high chair back so it's easier for him to get the right angle on the cup. He also likes it when I mix a little bit of juice with the water in his sippy.

As for eating, we've not really started finger foods besides puffs, and he still has a hard time getting them into his mouth. I don't really have any advice there besides to just keep offering them to her.

Practice makes perfect. Just give her time.

Yes! just keep offering food and the sippy cup every time you feed solids... it seriously happened out of the blue.

  • She'll come around in her own time. Don't stress it. Let her watch you while you eat, monkey see monkey do.
  • Kids develop in their own time, I wouldn't worry about it.  My DD is 9 months and she doesn't drink out of a sippy cup yet either.  She's good with eating off of a spoon but despite having six teeth she hasn't gotten a hang of chewing things like blueberries yet so I have to squish them before she eats them.

  • LO is JUST starting to figure it out. It's still very hard for him, but he'll pick up a puff and then drop it a few times before getting one in his mouth.  The only suggestion I can add from the others is to pick one up yourself and slowly put it in your mouth, chew with exaggeration, then tell LO that she can do this, too!  I'd say I give LO 90% of the food that actually gets in his mouth, but he's learning:)
