My child is 28 months, so aging out of EI in 8 months, and I am just so lost in terms of learning what I need to know about his options starting at age 3. I hear a lot of comments from special needs parents along the lines of "Nobody tells you about X," and I'm so worried that we will miss out on a service or an opportunity because I didn't even know about it. We don't have much money so it is especially important that we use public services effectively.
Do you have any advice for a rookie on where to start with learning about everything that is out there?
Re: Where to start with learning about services?
As your child gets closer to three, this is a conversation you should have with your EI service coordinator. They can be a great resource for you. Mine came to all the meetings with us, spoke on my son's behalf, etc. His speech therapist said that he would likely be deemed ineligible for services since his speech had improved so much but he ended up getting speech 2 days a week (one private session/one group session). I think that if it wasn't for EI's help I wouldnt be receiving any services at all.
If you feel like EI isn't that helpful, I would reach out to some local community groups for help. My state has a parents information network and they help educate parents about the IEP process/provide support to SN parents.
