No breast milk

Had baby on Saturday. I still have no breast milk. Does this mean it isn't ever going to come in? I am still pumping trying to get it to come in but just drops come out. Im not sure what else to do. We are obviously feeding baby formula since no breast milk.

Re: No breast milk

  • Mine took about 4-5 days the first time to come in. It will come with a vengeance as long as you are still pumping/nursing regularly until then.

  • Keep nursing! Do a ton of skin to skin.

  • Get this today!!! https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/007159857X/ref=redir_mdp_mobile?pc_redir=1388004108 ALSO, keep that baby on you and make sure you are breastfeeding (with milk or without it) every 2 hours from start of feeding to start of second feeding. Wake the baby up to do so if you have to!
  • Have your baby try to breastfeed as much as possible... It's not abnormal for milk to take 5 days to come in for a first baby, but your baby needs to be nursing in order for the milk to come in, so your body knows it has a baby to feed.  (Baby sends the message better than a pump does- even their saliva encourages more milk production than a pump.)  Milk tends to come in much faster for subsequent babies, so don't base your expectations on STM+.

How much milk? I have like maybe a vial full drops really. So not much at all : (

My milk didnt come in for about 5 days. I did not supplement. Babies tummy is tiny. I just nursed as much as possible.

Mine came in at day 6. You don't need to use formula. Your colostrum is everything baby needs until your milk comes in. LO lost a tiny bit and then gained a TON.

  • My milk didn't come in til day 5. But I still hardly have any milk and am having to supplement. Just keep doing what your doing & try not to stress. Whatever you do though don't quit supplementing with formula. I was told not to supplement until my milk came in and my LO winded up in the NICU for 4 days because I wasn't supplementing. Your baby might be one that would be fine without supplementing but also could be one of the many that get very sick because they are not supplemented.

We are supplementing because she is getting nothing else and is starving all the time. I can't imagine not feeding her. We only get drops of colostrum, barely any. Also she has jaundice so dr told us we need to supplement so that she goes to the bathroom more and helps flush the jaundice.

Sounds like you are doing a great job! I'm glad you are supplementing! Try not to stress. I know that's easier said than done. My midwife had me start taking fenugreek supplement to help with my milk you might try that also. I've started to see a slight difference.

Well I'm not really sure, because I'm only nursing and haven't pumped at all. LO seems satisfied though so I'm not too worried about it. I can tell the difference in the amount of leakage I have, my oops and LOs poop has changed.

That's great! I have no leakage and lo doesn't seem to get anything at the breast which is why I started pumping to see what I was actually producing which isn't really anything. : (

  • Yes I spoke to the lc at the hospital and they said I should supplement because I really wasn't making anything and lo had some jaundice.
  • Usually when u only have colostrum come after 5 days of delivery then it could be possible s piece if placenta is still attached to uterus causing your body not to produce milk just colostrum bc it thinks ur still pregnant I would just check up with ur ob if or doesn't come in by tomorrow
