Bed rails

So it finally happened.  DS climbed out of his crib... multiple times.  It turned into a game.  Luckily he did it when DH and I were right there putting him to bed.

Last night DH took the front piece off and we babyproofed the heck out of his room.  Our crib doesn't come with a rail though.  We bought the Kids R Us swing-down rail (the regular version, not the extra long/tall version).  That thing is ridiculously high and long and we'll be returning it.  I was wondering if anyone had other suggestions.  I only saw two different styles at the particular BRU we went to and they were both by KRU.  Or is anyone foregoing a rail?  DH thinks DS doesn't need one.

Oh and last night - he went to bed just fine, but woke up in the middle of the night.  I woke up to him standing next to my side of the bed.  Hopefully we can get him to stay in his bed.  Baby steps.

Re: Bed rails

  • We got the Summer Infant Sure and Secure Double Bedrail.  One side can swing down too.  We haven't had any problems with it.

How low is the bed? Maybe I'm terrible but ours is low so i never worried about him falling out.

Ikea does make a tiny rail though.

J doesn't have one either. He fell off one night and stayed asleep through it and DH putting him back in bed. He hasn't done it since.

  • We have the Gulliver cribs from IKEA (converted to toddler beds)- so they are VERY low to the ground- but unstead of buying a rail, I just tightly rolled a beach towel and placed it between the mattress and the bedsheet.  This way it is a bump to remind them the edge is there, without offering them something else to climb over- my guys are HUGE climbers.  It has worked great- no one has fallen out of bed.

Now that I think of it, the bed is pretty low.  We did put a body pillow on the floor that runs almost the whole length of the bed, in case he rolls off.  Maybe DH is right on this one.  DH and I tend to be polar opposites on the safety spectrum, so whereas I think we should babyproof everything, he's always like "nah, he'll be ok."

Ooh, thanks for the tip!  Yeah, the rail we bought definitely looks like something DS would just try to climb over.

  • When we moved dd to a big girl bed went decided to go with Magic Bumpers. We have had them since this summer and they have been great. They are just a foam wedge that goes under the sheet and prevents them from rolling out. K has never fallen out and they look nicer to me then the ugly rails. I got them off amazon.

  • We did long rails on a twin bed like Babycakes.  He has gaps that he can go to at the head and foot to climb down out of bed.  He has a gate in his doorway to keep him in his room once he does get out of bed.  He doesn't have toys in his room but he does have a book shelf so he grabs some books to amuse himself for about 20 minutes before he starts hollering for us.
