Car seat question

Hello!  We just bought the Graco My Ride 65 convertible car seat so that our LO could rear-face up to 40 lbs.  Just one problem, my DH has a Mazda 3 and I have a Nissan Rogue and in both vehicles the car seat dominates the back seat and causes us to push the passenger front seat way up.  Can the car seat touch the front passenger seat?  I'm checking in the manuals and haven't found anything yet to recommend against it.  Does anyone else have this problem?  I want her to have a comfy seat and be as safe as possible but I can't have the passenger seat in the glove box!!  Thanks!!

Re: Car seat question

  • I'm not sure. We have a cosco sceneca which is fairly small from what I've observed. In DH's truck, the passenger seat is crammed way into the dashboard. The back of the seat touches the back of the carseat. It makes me uncomfortable, but we don't really have another option without forward facing her.

  • When I had our carseat double checked at the clinic, they said that it's important that the back of the carseat not touch the back of the passenger seat.  The way that the carseat works in a crash is that it folds towards the backseat.  If it's touching the passenger seat, it can get blocked from doing that fold.  It means that our passenger seat is quite squished (my parents can't fit in it, so they either have to ride in the back or drive our car), but it's safer for the baby.

  • Hmmm, we have this car seat in my Toyota Corolla and I don't believe it touches the front seat. I know DH drives laying down :not really but practically: so I may have to check to make sure it doesn't touch the carseat.

  • We have a britax boulevard and it CAN touch the back of the seat. It definitely depends in the car seat. I am sorry, I don't know about your specific car seat, but I just wanted to let you know some car seats can touch. Try googling it to find it on a car seat research site of some sort

  • When I had ours inspected the officer said it depends on the carseat. Some can't touch. Others can touch lightly, but shouldn't be braced. If you can't find any info in your manual or online maybe look into taking it in to an inspection station, and see what they say.
