Baby Names

Catherine. Give it to me straight.

The name Catherine is what I keep coming back to, with the nn Cate (I LOVE this spelling!).  I've gotten comments IRL that it's boring, or nerdy... that wouldn't bother me if I truly loved the name but I'm kinda on the fence.  What are your thoughts?  I also kind of like the spelling Catharine more, I guess because it's old and a bit more unique.

Don't be sorry!!  I think I feel the same way too, which is why it's hard for me to commit...

  • I think it is very dated/boring.

    Sorry!

  • I think it's beautiful.  It's my mom and my niece's middle name.  I don't think it's at all boring or nerdy.  It's classic.
  • I really like it.  It isn't over done/over used.  It is an older name, but doesn't sound old fashioned.  It goes well from child to adult.

I agree that it isn't very trendy/unique, but as a result it is a bit unusual these days and therefore unique in its own way.  I don't think it is a name without personality.

I prefer your initial spelling, but don't hate the "a" either.

  • It's a classic and I absolutely LOVE it (spelled Catherine).  We are likely naming our daughter Tess Catherine.  I couldn't possibly love Catherine more.  I also love Cate.

I agree with the bolded part especially.  As a teacher a Chaterine would be a great breath of fresh air among the Maddy, Addy, Emma, Emmy, Ella, Ellies of the world!  I like it a lot!

  • I love classic beautiful name...so glad to see after all the trendy, made up, spelled incorrectly,  boy names on girls.

    Love it!!!

  • I think it is boring and I also much prefer all of the spellings with a K...especially Kate. But that is just me :) I don't think it is nerdy though.
  • I definitely wouldn't spell it Catharine.

While I'm not a big fan of Catherine, I absolutely love Cate.

And "boring" isn't necessarily a bad thing in a name, in the sea of all the trendy, made up, awful names.

  • Catherine is kind of like vanilla ice cream. It's pretty good even if it is a little boring.

On one hand, it's classic and elegant, but on the other it's just blah. That said, I'd rather err on the side of boring, than trendy and made-up. 'Catherine' will always win over  'Nevaeh' or 'Preshus'.

  • I really like Catherine.  It is DD2's mn.  I used to think it was boring when I was younger, but the older I get the more I lean toward classic names as opposed to trendy names. It is my Mother's name, she goes by Cathy though.

  • As the mom of a Katherine (she goes by Kate), I obviously love it.

Timeless, elegant, versatile, feminine.  There are endless nickname options.  I like Catherine with a C but am not a huge fan of Cate with a C.

    Love! It's a fabulous name!
  • I like it. It puts me in the mind of the many queens who have had that name (Catherine of Aragon, Catherine de Medici, Catherine the Great), so it's very classic and just a little bit regal in the long form. Cate is always cute.

  • I think it's beautiful and classic! It's not overdone like some (Elizabeth comes to mind - which is also a beautiful name, but extremely popular), but it's not obscure in the least.

And I love the nickname Cate! With that spelling, it's my favorite. I (very) briefly considered the name at one point, but I have a friend named Katherine - I don't see her too much, but we've been friends since fourth grade and I do see her often enough that it would be weird.

Plus, she would be in good company with Duchess Catherine - who is as classy as her name!

  • We considered it (well, Katherine) for DD1 but ended up going with Kate instead, since that was what we were going to call her anyway. I think it's beautiful and classic and not boring.

Then again, DD2 is Caroline and you could say the same thing :)
