Toddlers: 24 Months+

How do you treat a cold in your toddler?

DS has never actually been sick. DH is just getting over a bad cold and DS woke up today coughing. I checked his temp and it's low 100.5 but a slight fever.

I am not interested in giving him any medicine, more looking for natural ways to help him get better. He eats very healthy, lots of fruit especially.

Thank you in advance for the ideas!

  • i very rarely do anything more than make sure she gets plenty of fluids (water, watered down juice) and rest. i maybe put vicks rub on her feet under socks at night if it gets too bad.

  • My girls have been sick for the least week or two. We have humidifiers running in their rooms for naps/night, DD2's crib mattress inclined and DD1 has a pillow to keep her head elevated a big, rub Vicks on their feet then cover with socks, use saline nasal spray and a nasal aspirator to keep noses clear, and over a year you can give them "tea" made with just hot water and a little honey to help soothe coughs and sore throats. You can also try tylenol or motrin for the fever, but if he's acting okay and doesn't seem uncomfortable I probably wouldn't treat it at 100.5 just yet.

  • Lots of rest, fluids, hot water with honey, a humidfier in the room.   I don't usually give med unless the fever is over 101 or so and they are super uncomfortable

  • Yeah I usually just let a cold go.  Fluids, rest, extra snuggles, etc.  I make frozen pops for my DS and using OJ sounds like a good idea for when he is sick.

  • Lots of water, humidifier, elevate mattress if there is a lot of congestion, Vicks, honey if there is cough, and Tylenol/Advil if there is a fever.

  • I don't do much. If he's obviously uncomfortable due to fever, I would give Tylenol, but I like those cool packs you can put on their foreheads too.

Mostly we just rest, drink lots of water, I make a mean home made chicken noodle soup, which is a bit of a family tradition when one has a cold.

We also use a humidifier to help, and I do think it really does!

  • Lots of water and Ah Choo rub on his chest, though I'll give him Tylenol if he's feverish.
  • We use nose Frieda nose aspirator! And humidifier/Vicks plug in . He cries a lot and we have to hold him at night. Ugh!! And your lo never had a cold! ? How?? I want your secret? Please! Vitamins?
  • Hydrate and homeopathic cold & flu relief from our local health food store. I think it's by NatureBio...works wonders! We also elevate his mattress and use an all natural product like Vicks vapor rub if congested.

We've been very lucky. We aren't sure why! I like to give myself credit for the first 18 months because of breastfeeding lol! After that I say it's him he's such a healthy eater. All he eats are fruits, veggies, nuts, beans...
