What's your bed time like?

What's your bed time like and how long does it take?  Currently I will take DS into his dark room, turn on the white noise machine, swaddle him, sit in the rocking chair and nurse him until he falls asleep.  This usually takes place around 10pm, a little earlier depending on how cranky he is, or how tired I am.  It usually takes about an hour to get him down and asleep for good.  I will nurse and rock him to sleep, and when I think he is fully asleep I will put him in his crib.  As soon as I put him down he opens his eyes and starts fighting his swaddle.  I usually have to do this 3 or 4 times until he finally stays asleep for a few hours.  Last night bed time took 2.5 hours.  Ugh.  It's so exhausting, especially when he is over tired and keeps fighting sleep.  I dread bed time, and DH is no help since I am breastfeeding and he will only fall asleep if his mouth is attached to my boob.

Re: What's your bed time like?

  • Some nights are like that for us too and its not fun. But we try to do a bedtime routine like below and it works most nights. O is asleep between 8:30 and 9:30.

Bath close to 7, then play with brothers or be held by Daddy
8ish he will nurse while Daddy reads two bedtime stories
    Diaper change and swaddled
Rocked or burped to sleep or near sleep
Finally, put in crib and cover with a blankie

When I go back to work I am not sure we will get things going at 7, but I realllly hope we are close. Good post bc I wonder the same thing! Good luck!

  • Time-wise it varies a lot, anywhere from 8-11ish, depending on when his last nap ended. I do the bedtime routine which is change diaper, swaddle, and nurse in side lying position till he's asleep. Then a wait about 5-10 minutes to make sure he's out before transferring him to the rnp (in our room). Takes about an hour, sometimes 1 1/2. He's a slow eater!

  • My LO is still very much a newborn (hasn't even reached his *due date* yet) so we are still just doing what we have to do to get through... He still sleeps about 18 hours a day and only has 1-2 wake periods of about 1 hour each--other wise he's only awake to eat--if that even.

I typically start getting ready for bed around 9/10 and then feed him again right before I go to bed in hopes of getting a couple hours before the next feeding. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't! Last night, for example, I fed him at 11 and then he had about an hour where he was wide awake. Then he needed to eat again but refused to sleep unless he was being held... Long night short, DH took over at 4:00 so I could get some sleep. Hoping to get into more of a routine soon!

  • I usually start bedtime around 8 with a bath. Then I read to her while she's eating her bottle. When she's done eating I give her a binky and rock her to sleep. Usually lay her down in her room about 9:30. Every once in a while she'll wake up so then I'll rock her a little more in the dark. We don't have a white noise machine in her room but we do have a space heater and humidifier going.
  • At 10pm I diaper, lights off in the living room, feed, swaddle half way through the bottle, rock, bed at 11pm. She goes right to sleep and sleeps till anywhere between 4-6am.

  • Starting at 7:30 we do bath, swaddle, then she nurses while DH reads until she gets drowsy. Usually she gets put in her crib around 8.

  • We start our bedtime routine around 9 to 9:30, unless it's bath nights, then it's around 8:30. He's usually asleep by 10 or 10:15 but is restless for a little bit. I rock him until he finally settles down then lay him down around 10:30 or so. I wish it was earlier so we're going to slowly start making it earlier and earlier.

  • 7:30 or 8:00 is bath time. Every other night we use soap, the other nights its just a rinse. We don't rush bath time. He really likes it and both my husband and I use it to catch up about the day as we sit by the tub and wash B. After that, it's lotion, diaper, jammies and pray time with mommy and daddy. Then bottle in the rocking chair with the lights off. This is around 8 or 8:30 depending on when bath started. He takes a full 5 oz. And then I burp him and rock him. Once he's asleep, I keep him for a 1/2 hr or so while DH and I watch TV. I usually lay B in his crib around 9:30. He will wake up at midnight, which DH does, and then again at 4, which I take. And then B is up to start the day around 7/7:30.
  • I don't know why, but for the past week and a half (almost two) DS only sleeps 30/45 mins. during the day at a time, but a whole lot (some days might get one two hour nap) . . . and then, magically, between 8-10PM he falls asleep, and stays asleep for nine hours :D

No real routine, save for swaddling/laying on the side/feeding ~
