Nothing, I wish I could afford one. I never wear a winter coat, I just wear a fleece at all times. The fleece I got at ON 3 years ago is not really cutting it anymore.
North Face has kind of cheaped out. The quality of their consumer grade, buy it at Diick's, stuff is not very good. Every sorority girl around here seems to have a North Face Denali jacket.
Their top line stuff is still very good and can actually be used for what it's intended. It's expensive, though.
Nothing. I have my NF fleece from 8 years ago and it still looks fine. Clothes that last years? I'm all over that.
Someone gave B one for Christmas. I likely would not have bought her one myself since she grows so fast, I can't justify it. Also, she has 11 billion winter coats this year as everyone we know handed one down to her, of course, after I'd already purchased, taken the tags off, and washed the one bought.
Honestly, for the price of actually GOOD North Face stuff, I'd rather buy Marmot or Mountain Hardwear. If I want to spend a little more, I go with Arc'teryx, which has awesome quality and functionality. I stay away from Patagonia, because it seems to be going the way of North Face.
Um nothing? When my Columbia ski jacket dies (which may be soon) and I actually start skiing again (well, snowboarding) I think I'm splurging for North Face. I wouldn't spend that much money on a jacket just to have it, I actually USE it for its intended purpose!
I love North Face. They are great quality and I think they look nice too. They are well worth the money IMO, but because they are expensive its not something I buy often. Luckily they last for years. And years.
But, compared to other brands you can get for the same price, North Face is not that great quality. Yes, it's better than Old Navy or Gap or whatever, but I wouldn't rely on it for a backpacking trip. However, you have to go to an actual outdoor store to get those brands. I live in a very outdoorsy town and the only people that wear North Face are the sorority girls.
Nothing but the price for me. I have always wanted a fleece bc I hate winter coats. I wear sweatshirts 90% of the time when I am not at work. It sucks trying to put a winter coat over a sweatshirt. The denali would fit nicely. My grandfather got all the grandkids Sypder Jackets for Christmas this year. I freaking love that thing. It think its stylish, but warm and will last forever.
I have no idea. I have a fleece for A that he wears as his primary jacket 95% of the time. I love that I can leave it on him in the carseat and he stays plenty warm most of the winter.

I went to CSU - I know what you're saying. I got a Spyder fleece instead and I love it. It's just a fleece and not for hard core activities but day to day it's been awesome for 10 years now.
I really like my NF backpack though - that thing is tough, 15 years later it's still in great shape.

I didn't read all the replies, until now, but I agree with this.
However, I gave my husband a "Live Simply" Patagonia t-shirt last year and he wears that thing out. It's ultra soft. I also have a Patagonia pullover that I adore.
Don't get me wrong, I think Patagonia is excellent quality. Just around here, it's turned into the status symbol. I actually own some Patagonia shirts and tanks, which I love.
It's pretty expensive relative to other jackets. But I guess it's just based on the frame of reference.
North Face is frakking awesome. I was thisssssclose to buying DS a winter jacket from North Face. DH and I even battled over it. He finally won with the argument that DS is growing like a weed and it's not really that cold in Georgia. So I bought him this cheaper jacket from Old Navy. It already looks like sh!t and the stitching is coming off.
Next year I shall prevail.
Amazon, Back Country or Sierra Trading Post. We got an amazing Spyder jacket for DS at a fraction of retail. It grows with him so he can use it next winter. We spent the same amount as our friend who bought at ON.
Altrech.com and moosejaw are great sites too. I bought some Smartwool long undies for half the price of REI on altrech this weekend.

Spyder rocks. I have one of their softshells for snowboarding and I love that thing.
I love north face. The north face parka I bought in 2005 is still in great shape with pretty heavy wear. It was expensive ($250 or 300) but given that it's been in use for 7 years that's not bad at all.
Nothing's wrong with it if you like to be warm and pay a lot for an ugly jacket. I really want one because my winter coat is so bulky but I can't justify the expense for a coat that is too ugly to wear to work. Same thing with Uggs....super warm and ugly at the same time. Boo.
I should note that I do not go on adventures so getting a coat like that would only be worn to the grocery store in my situation.

Seriously. North Face is not the only brand of higher end coat. Look at Marmot and Mountain Hardwear. Marmot is my favorite and they look awesome. Plus, it's not North Face.
Typical Saturday morning breakfast scene in The Fort:
Uggs, tights, North Face Denali jacket, hair that looks like it hasn't been brushed in a week along with a forced "I'm hungover look".
I don't know what is fashionable or attractive about that.
You forgot a Starbucks cup in one hand and Nalgene in the other and very big sunglasses.... Well, except for that when I was in school it was Birkenstocks instead of Uggs.
Are we/they still doing Nalgenes? Gah, things haven't changed so much.
A lot of the North Face hate online comes from college kids. There are national universities like U of Wisconsin and U of Michigan that have student bodies made up of a mix of in-state, less affluent kids and rich kids from other states, largely the northeast. A lot of those rich kids show up every fall in their North Face jackets. So yeah, a lot of the hate comes from the price point and class warfare.
I prefer Marmot myself as well, not that I need a real coat in SoCal. Weather is 60 degrees and slightly rainy today. Man, it's awful!
-My son was born in April 2012. He pretty much rules.

I was going to say something like this, but you summed it up much better. I'd rather go w/ Marmot or Mtn Hardwear as well.

Yup. Picture every annoying person you knew and then have them all wear the same thing. It's easy to get a negative association after that.

I love my NF. I fancy myself a girl who enjoys outdoor adventures (at least I did when I was a teenager) and we will hopefully be moving to Seattle sometime in the next few years, so it's good to know that NF is not in for adventures anymore. Guess I will have to upgrade so I don't get judged...
So random this is posted today. I was just thinking this morning as I put on my Gap fleece that I wear it enough to upgrade to a nicer one like NF. I was planning on trying to find one on sale after the season. Didn't know people had strong opinions about the brand.
Re: what's wrong with North Face?
This doesn't reflect my personal views- I just like this particular take on the wonka meme and will use it every chance I get. Which isn't often.
Speaking of which- where is wonka?
Better?
So price is the issue?
Quality winter gear costs, always has, always will.
Heck, I bought a pair of very midline downhill ski pants this past week for $250 (and that was on sale).
Yay Canada. (it's expensive up here!)

My sister got all of our Northface at 75% off wholesale.
Yeah that pretty much was the best thing ever.
Oh a $500 jacket for like $75....don't mind if I do.

Nothing's wrong with them. To me they are like Uggs- totally ubiquitous. I am guessing that is where the backlash is coming from.
I don't have one so I don't know how much they cost, but I am guessing they don't cost more that any other decently manufactured cold weather jacket.

I live in the farking HILLS and go on many adventures! (getting to work can sometimes be an adventure)
I do like to mix up my outerwear, though. I also like Mountain Hardware and whatever will keep me warm here in March.
My NF fleece (above) is stark white. I think I was on something when I bought it but it cleans nicely and feels like a duvet cover.
You forgot a Starbucks cup in one hand and Nalgene in the other and very big sunglasses.

Yes! It really is quite comical. They try so hard to look like they're not trying so hard.
I think it's Siggs (aluminum water bottles) now.

I had never heard of Marmot, so I just looked them up.
Ho.ly. Cr.ap. I'd have to sell my car to buy most of that stuff.
Nalgene was awesome until we realized their products were full of BPA. Not sure I trust them anymore.
Although I do use a lot of their products in lab. I just don't drink from them.
