Milk questions for those that bottle feed - XP

Right after DS's 1st birthday we began introducing whole cow's milk. He takes it fine cold out of a sippy but has to have it warmed when he takes it out of a bottle. He is getting better with the sippy but not proficient enough with it to get substantial calories from his milk that way. He does eat solids (either purees or finger foods) several times per day. I feel like I should be weaning him from the bottle and I have dropped at least 1 bottle a day, but he's still getting about 6-8 oz in each bottle, for a total of about 24 oz of milk or formula per day and some days more than that, depending on how hungry he seems to be. Usually it's 3 bottles per day though. Just curious how many of your LO's still take bottles at one year old (or nearly one year old) and how many ounces of milk/formula/pumped BM they are getting per day at this point?

  • DD is still on formula.  She's getting between 32-40 oz from a bottle per day.  I'm trying not to freak out that she'll be 1 year in 10 days.  She's also less than proficient at using her cup.

I've asked around my parent group, and many people are in/were in a similar situation.  I've noticed her taking more solids recently, so I'm trying to chill a little and let the transition happen naturally for her.

    Good luck!

  • I've just recently switched dd to milk (she will be 1 in 2 weeks).  We are currently using bottles and sippys.  Before switching from formula she was drinking about 24 oz/day.  With milk, she isn't drinking AS much, but I'm hoping it is just her adjusting to the switch and it will increase again.  She is prolly getting 16 oz?  I plan to give it a week to see how she is adjusting and if her amt will increase.
  • My daughter has been eating around 14 ounces from the bottle for a while now.  We just used the last of our formula a couple days ago so now she is on straight cows milk.  She still drinks 2 bottles a day for about 12 ounces and then about 1/2 cup from a sippy throughout the day.  And she drinks water.  But she caught onto solids really early so I actually had to hold her back from solids or she would have dropped formula well before she should have.

  • Everything I've heard says they should get 16 to 24 oz of whole milk per day. Though some things say less is okay if they are getting other sources of calcium, vit D, and fat. So it sounds like you are in that range, which is good.

  • I never heard about dropping the bottle for a sippy cup when they turn one with DD1, so she still got her milk in a bottle. She would take sippy cups just fine, and she also like drinking out of toddler bottles that come with a straw, but the whole they are one, no more bottles seemed to have escaped me. I will say that when it was in a bottle, it had to be warm. I guess they are creatures of habit, and milk from a sippy cup to them isn't the same as milk from a bottle. She still likes her last cup of milk before bedtime to be warm. With DD2, I introduced a sippy cup earlier because she used colic bottles, and I am just tired of washing so many little parts. She still gets 3-4 6 oz bottles of formula for a total of 18-24 oz of formula a day, and I suspect that will drop to 12-18 oz when she is around one. I give her yogurt in the morning and will probably give her cheese sticks as a snack when she gets more than just two teeth, and that should suffice for calcium and fat and all. As for her liquid intake, DDs can have all the water they want in addition to milk. I never had a problem with DD1 adjusting to milk and taking less.
