Fake nails...realistic?

I am contemplating getting fake nails put back on, because I have not had them in forever, and I kind of miss having them stay nice for such a long time.

My real nails are very strong and get long on their own and everyone thinks they are fake when they are painted anyways, but the problem is that the nail polish never holds for long, so I am getting weekly manicures.

For those who have had babies, I was just wondering how realistic is it to have fake nails when the baby gets here?

I see the negatives, in that it could poke baby and make it harder to put on diaper cream, clean them, etc because it gets under the nails and they could be too bulky for some stuff...

The positives being...I wont be able to go to the nail salon every week once baby gets here for touch ups and stuff because I will be too busy with her and fake nails last longer between touch-ups.

I'm not really one for no nail polish; although, I know that might be the only option.

Just thought they would be nice for the baby shower and upcoming photos.

Any suggestions?

Re: Fake nails...realistic?

  • I used to get fake nails but being an RN student (now an RN) we're not allowed to have acrylic nails. But I found something I love so much better. Gel polish! Lasts 2+ weeks. By then my nails have grown out like acrylics do but the polish is still there and it's time for a manicure anyways. Wish I knew how to post pictures b/c I have the prettiest silver glitter gel polish on right now, looks like I punched a damn disco ball lol.

  • I had them with DD. I stopped getting them done when I kept getting baby poop under them and had to scrub after every poopy dipe. It was gross.

  • I would do gel polish.  Acrylic nails are terrible for the natural nail. Gel polish looks very pretty and lasts around two weeks.

  • Definitely gel polish! Goes over your natural nail and you don't get that ridge underneath to catch things in. I've had mine on for over two weeks now and it still looks decent!

  • I used to get gel, it they wold chip after a week so I was so happy to not have anything to worry about right after having DS. Now I have been getting perm French uv, but getting them off soon. I have to have my nails done, too and really wish gel worked for me.

to the ladies who love gel, what kind have you used? I've used shellac and opi, but both chip on me.

  • I would be more concerned with having time to sit in the salon every two weeks to get them filled. My son is 9 months old, and I've only had one pedicure in that time!

I've used OPI, Shellac, Gelish, pretty much all of them. The salon I go to now has a technique that I haven't seen other places use. They do 2 fingers at a time so that the different coats don't have time to run into your cuticles. If that happens even a little bit it causes the polish to peel and chip and whatnot. So, they'll do 2 fingers, put it under the light, switch hands, 2 fingers, light, etc etc... And there gel manicures have lasted the longest of all the salons I've been to.

  • Gel polish.  Way better for your nails and is "natural" nail but lasts 2+ weeks -- sometimes I can stretch mine to 3+ weeks, as long as I dont' break any nails.

I had acrylics for a while and they were such a pain to keep up and I hated that they were FAKE.  But I have terrible nails.  The gel polish actually makes my nails strong and thick and so they grow out better -- combined with my PNV, my nails are currently awesome.

  • Gel polish will ruin your nails after a while too. My moms still look haggard and gross and she's had them off for a few months. I would just use one of those multi sided buffers and make your nails look really shiny but without polish. Your hands will be so close to baby's face, I wouldn't want any chemicals on them. Yes I know there are chemicals in everything but nail polish gives me a headache, I can't imagine what it does to an infant.

  • My mom works in a nursery and she said fake nails are such a PIA when working with the babies. They scratch the babies and all sorts of stuff can get stuck under them.

I used to get mine done every two weeks but stopped because I was running out of time to go to the salon for an hour+ every two weeks. And that was before I had a baby! I couldn't imagine making time for it with a baby.

  • I was actually thinking of getting my nails done too!

But I know it's not the best idea, for me, with a new born. Probably scratch baby.

I have nails like yours, that are hard and grow out very nice and everyone thinks they're fake. I'll probably just use nail polish or don't wear any for awhile.

Another reason stopping me is bc of the amount of bacteria that they hold! I wouldn't want that near my newborn.

  • Love gel polish when I get a manicure.

I would never ever ever have acrylic nails again. They gross me out.

  • Keep it simple, just keep your nails trimmed very short and make life easier for you and your baby.

  • No, it's not realistic.  It's actually a very bad idea.  Fake nails hold so many bacteria on them, under them, within them,...heck all over them that they have banned them from being worn in a lot of hospitals all over the nation.

If you want more medical support on the subject, just ask your doc or midwife or pediatrician.

The whole scratching issue...I've accidentally scratched my kids with the dragon claws this pregnancy has given me...so I really don't see that as a reason to not get them.

The health hazards alone should be enough.

  • I currently have acrylics.  I never had them during the NB stage, I did have them when my twins were around 18m and it was NBD changing diapers or anything at that time.  I don't think I would've scratched the baby if I had them with a NB though.

The only reason I would suggest you not get them (you can always have them removed if they don't work out after the birth) is that you say your nails are healthy.  I've always had horrible nails.  If I had strong, healthy nails, I don't think I'd have acrylics.

My mom did gel for a while, she stopped getting it because she said it was destroying her nails (or the the salon).  She said that not all of the polish would come off with whatever they do to remove it and then they'd have to file the rest off.

I would either get acrylics with the possibility of removal, use clear coat, or buff the heck out of your natural nails so they look nicer.

  • I have a feeling that once you have the baby, you won't care about your nails as much or have the time.  Just get your nails done at the salon b4 the baby comes with polish and keep them shorter.  I have a 1 yr old and one on the way and I tried really hard to find time to paint my nails this Christmas with some pretty sparkly nail polish I bought....ha!  Never had time....I perhaps have the time to actually do it...but not enough time to sit there while they dry :(

One day though, one day....also, as everyone else said, you will get poop and butt cream under them.  And boogers....

  • These are actually a pretty serious health hazard. As a nurse, we aren't allowed to wear them at all because they harbor so much bacteria, despite handwashing. There was talk that an L & D nurse actually caused some infections in newborns that were related to the fake nails. Things you never think about!
