Nurseries and Baby Gear

So much to learn!

Hubby and I started looking at baby products this weekend, and we've had some hand me down offers coming in from family/friends (yay!). We've decided that there are a few items we are going to require new (Baby's safety is PRIMARY above offending people!). We did see a convertible carseat and separate stroller we liked in BRU, except now when online I can't seem to find any product reviews... anyone know of any sites?

Secondly, as the parent generation is 30+ years out of having their own newborns, there are guidelines that have changed (no crib bumpers, etc). How would you recommend politely declining offers for homemade bumpers, etc? Some people get the, we survived, you survived it's fine mentality. I was thinking for the touchy folks, accept the items, then use them only when Baby isn't in the crib etc. We love that our families want to make special items for Baby, but again, safety first!

Re: So much to learn!

  • Some advice...

-the Baby Bargains book is great, Consumer Reports are not.  Amazon reviews rock but you have to be careful not to be scared off by one bad review if the rest are all positive.

-Think a lot about whether you want the infant car seat or to use a convertible seat from birth.  I personally couldn't have lived without the infant seat but some people don't need the convenience.

-don't get a travel system from BRU.  Find a stroller you like, that fits your lifestyle, your car, etc and then get a car seat adapter for it.   Or get a snap n go and get a stroller later.

-do read reviews!  Amazon has some of the best I think.

-if people give you stuff you don't want to use, thank them and donate it or toss it.  You can try to decline it but it's often not worth the fight with family over why you aren't using something they did.  You can always say that the AAP doesn't recommend bumpers and that they recommend rear facing your children in the car seat until at least 2 but not everyone cares.

Also lurk on this board, you will learn a lot about what people like, what products are really nice to have, etc.

  • Ditto Baby Bargains and Amazon reviews.

You can't really dictate what people give you... A registry is helpful, though.  As PP said, if you get stuff you won't use, just say thank you and donate it.
