Mohawks...NBD or no effing way

I was playing with my nearly 7 yr old DS's hair and combed it into a mohawk.  He said he wants one.  His birthday is at the end of the month and we'll take family pics in a few months so it should have time to grow out before then.  I figure it's just hair and it will grow back.  Or am I missing something here?  WWYD?

Re: Mohawks...NBD or no effing way

  • Yup, I'm team "it's just hair and it will grow back" for sure. (And I think it would be kind of cute!)

My only concern would be that kids are so fickle at that age, I'd worry he might change his mind after you did it. Maybe let him think about it a few days before you go through with it?

  • I would say NBD, but check with his school. I know in my county it's against dress code and they'll send him home until it's buzzed off.

  • I'm in the no effing way camp. I think mohawks like shaved ones look trashy on kids. I have no problem putting some gel in Buddy's hair when he wants a fauxhawk though.

  • I would do it.  Even if only for a day or two and then buzz it.
  • I am generally in the "it will grow back" camp and hair is an easy way for children to have some control.

I will say, I do not like mohawks that are actually cut into the hair.  The trendier cuts that are combed into mohawks look a bit more...classy(?) to me.

Really? Lame. I could see if it was a certain height they'd violate a rule, by otherwise, whatever.

I sat behind a kid in high school who had a twelve inch mowhawk. It kind of sucked. But it's just hair, and it's fun, so why not?

  • It is just hair, but I'd do it over the summer.  It's too cold right now & it might be against the school's dress code.

I know it's just hair, but I hate mohawks. I'd probably say no. Sucks I'm going to be "that" mom.

Yep, me, too. Mohawks scream trashy to me.

This area sucks. My friend had her kindergartener sent home on the first day of school. He wasn't even there for an hour. The principal called it "deviant".  It looked adorable if you ask me.

I'm totally going to be that mom. Also like PP suggested take him to a nice place and have it cut so that the middle is a tiny bit longer than the sides and tell him its a mohawk.

Last night we were hanging out with a friend and he was asking me where I draw the line on boys hair cuts. I said No mohawks, no flat tops, and no rat tails. He will have his hair cut nicely and will not be "that" kid.  I want my kids to have a more classic look.

    Thats just me though.

  • I think 7 is old enough for a kid to get to pick his hair style. As long as it is in school dress code, I wouldn't care.

  • It's just hair.

This is one of those things that if the kid asks for it, do it.  I am fairly conservative in the way that I dress but wasn't always that way.  If my kid wants funky hair or clothes I get it.

I however do think it's kind of lame when parents try to "style" their kids a certain way.  If J wants to wear plaid pants and a polka dot top and fairy wings I think I am going to let her.

Not saying that is what you are doing, though, at all.

  • I think faux hawks are adorable and we did it for DS's 1 yr pics. And he looked very cute if I do say so myself. Not a fan of the shaved look, but I think it's an easy to grow out hair cut, so I probably would let DS if he really wanted.

  • Honestly, they can look trashy, but hair isn't something I'm really going to stress over.  I will check with the school.  I didn't think about that.  Thanks ladies!

ETA:  I did tell him that if he didn't like it, it would grow back, but take some time.  He said he was ok with it.

I never got to do anything fun with my hair. By the time I was old enough to be able to, I was also too old for those looks.

Yeah, I was in ballet until college (conformity central), and I just realized recently that I'm sad I never got to dye my hair purple (which I dreamed of all through high school) and now I'm way too old to do it.

  • No.  People judge on appearances and I think that mohawks make kids come off as little rebel children.

Count me in on this opinion as well. What will you say to him though when he says he wants to grow it out (if he ever wants to do that). I would be afraid if you let him do what he wants with his hair now, what will you say in a few years.

  • NBD - but I might make him wait until the last week of school or something.  Or you could let him do it as part of his birthday celebrations.  I got my hair permed for my birthday when I was 11 or 12 - it was a totally cool, special thing to do with my mom.

  • I'm in the NBD camp.  Although I would prefer a faux hawk or one where it is cut into the hair and not shaved.  I might say no to a full on mohawk.

I'd probably let him grow it out.  I don't think it would be a big deal.  Is it my personal taste?  No, but it is his body and the same would go for DD.

  • I wouldn't at 7 years old.  Since I know he'll do something crazy with his hair when he is a teenager I am going to wait until he can pay for it himself.

  • To me it's no big deal. DH has a Mohawk and both he and I cannot wait until Cade is old enough  to give him one. It's just hair. I had fun with mine (still do in  fact) when I was a kid, the kids should too.

I wanted purple hair, too. I still think about purple highlights but can never pull the trigger. As a younger mom I have enough trouble getting taken seriously. I don't want to handicap myself.

Don't think like that. I'm 22 and my hair changes color almost monthly. Add in the large visible tattoos too. If you want to do it then just do it. It's self expression and society should not dictate the color of ones hair. Then again I love my hair so much I have special "work wigs" when they don't allow crazy hair.

I think this, though DH may disagree.  So far we've kept the boys' hair military short.  We'll see what happens.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I dont think mohawks on kids are cool. H's nephew has pics of him up on fb with one and I think its the most idiotic thing.

But, I also think it would be cool to do if your son wants it, and it would definitely make you the coolest mom ever, and there isn't anything actually wrong with it (although check his school's dress code), so you should do it. You cant let the opinions of others keep you from doing something fun and safe with your kid.

It's different when you have to deal with the school on a regular basis, though. And I'm at the point where I'm trying to gather other parents as friends. They're all older and I'd be putting myself behind further if I did. IDK if it's just small town or what, but there's a lot of homogeneity.

I feel ya. I worry about my age sometimes too. However, I've made lots of friends being just my crazy self. Even older moms. If they are going to judge you fir the color of your hair, then they will judge you no matter what. That's been my experience at least.

  • I'm definitely a conservative dresser, and I've never done anything crazy with my hair.

But I don't care if DS does. And I'm kind of surprised at the number of people who are calling Mohawks on kids "trashy". Trashy seems a strong word for a kid's hair style. I could see calling a hair style "trashy" if there were wangs or curse words cut into the hair, but a Mohawk? I'd let DS do that.

  • Camp nbd (assuming it doesn't violate dress code).

My friend's son got a mohawk one summer and wanted to keep it. So his parents made a deal - as long as he keeps his grades up and doesn't get into trouble, he gets to make decisions about his hairstyle.  But if he messes up in either grades or behavior, he loses that privilege.  So far he's been rocking the 'hawk for 3 years and is on his middle school's version of the honor roll.
