Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Tips on Travelling with a 16mo?

Hi Ladies, we are taking our 16mo toddler on a plane for a 6 hour trip in 2 weeks.  I have been hearing horrible stories.  Any tips on surviving the plane trip with a toddler?  How to calm them down if they are not happy...etc etc.  Anything would be great!  Thanks a million!

  • Trip to the bathroom. Play in the water... just walking up and down the rows can be nice a little change of scenery can go a long way. Snacks and lots of different ones... thats all i have to offfer. We will be taking a similar trip jn March when ds is 15 mnths and i cant decide if flying at
night will be a good idea or a horrible idea. Good luck just remember it will end and if the people around you are grumpy say sorry and you never have ti see them again. Lol

  • We just flew with our 15 mo at Christmas.  It was only a 2 hour flight, so I'm not sure if this will help you on your longer flight.  We found keeping her awake and tiring her out before we got on the plane helped. (It took her a little bit, but she did sleep a good amount of the time we were on the plane).  I also tried to have her be kind of hungry when we got on the plane so she would be interested in the snacks I brought.  Bring snacks, books, and toys that your LO doesn't see every day, that helped keep her interested.  I have traveled a lot with my daughter and found that passengers are more often than not, very helpful and sympathetic, rather than irritated by the baby nearby.

    Good luck!

  • Snacks and a lot of activities. It also helps sitting on an aisle seat, towards the back. You can easily move up and down and let LO stand in the walkway if they get restless.

  • I got dd this cheap, small doodle board thing for Christmas and she loves it. It was like $3 at target, fisher price maybe, in neon with a plastic "pen" attached and you erase it by swiping. Easier than crayons for travel.

All I can say is good luck!

  • We flew with DD when she was 14 months.  I bought a few new toys that she had never used before the flight and pulled them out when we were on the plane so they would be brand new to her.  And lots of snacks.  We will be flying from NC to AK in May when she will be 23 months.  I normally don't let her play with the kindle fire, but I will download several games for her in case she gets fussy.

  • Do you have a magnadoodle? My daughter is 22 months and is OBSESSED with hers. It lets her color without the annoying crayon dropping. They sell mini ones at Walmart for $3. I would also suggest lots of snacks!

This is pretty much what we did - our flights were scheduled at his naptime and he had a seat. I think being in the car seat really helped him. If we had to lap seat him it wouldn't have gone smoothly for us - just the type of kid he is. He slept most of our outgoing flight and didn't at all coming back. Magnadoodle - food - water and me doing every entertaining thing I could think of got us through it. It wasn't easy but the stress I had before hand was worse than the actual event. Most people were very helpful.

  • We travel a lot internationally and so do most of our friends with kids - therefore we get tons of unsolicited advice on this topic.  Many seasoned travelers have recommended bringing scotch tape and post it notes because toddlers tend to be fascinated by the stickiness and like sticking them all over everything.  Then at the end of the flight you can easily pull it off the seat, tray, etc and just throw it out without damaging anything.  We brought a selection of this kind of stuff on our last flight but actually barely ended up using it because it went so much better than expected.  Anyway, it's an interesting idea and certainly doesn't take up much space in your bag of tricks.
