Beco carrier, thoughts on different models

I am wondering if anyone has personal experience with a Beco carrier.  I think I have decided on getting one because it is supposed to be comfortable like the Ergo, but baby can face outward as well as inward, unlike the Ergo.  Anyway, it appears that baby can face out and in with the gemini and gemini le models, but not with the butterfly 2 model, is that correct?  Also, what are the significant differences betweeen the gemini and gemini le?

TIA for any responses.  I haven't been able to find a local retailer that sells them so I could ask a salesperson about it.

Re: Beco carrier, thoughts on different models

  • I'm afraid I can't answer the difference questions I think the difference is in the straps?, but we have a Beco and love love love it. An excellent choice and you are rightbaby can face both ways.

  • The only question I can answer is about the Butterfly vs. Gemini. You are correct, the Butterfly only faces inward. I had a Beco and eventually replaced it with an Ergo because I hated it. Love my Ergo much more!  But I prefer not to have baby facing out anyway so it wasn't an issue for me.

  • The beco Gemini is the carrier I list for. I do like having my babies face out and so do they. I loved my Bjorn but its really bad on your back and babies grow fast. I really want this one for my next child.

And yes the butterfly you can't face outward. But I'm not sure on the difference of the le. Sorry.

  • I went with the Butterfly 2. I chose that one b/c you can hand baby off to DH or whoever without removing them from the carrier! Also, idk where, but I read that facing out isn't recommended so that wasn't a position that I required of my carrier.

  • Thanks everyone for the feedback.  Guess I can at least eliminate the butterfly from my consideration.  QueSyrah, can you say more about exactly why you preferred the ergo over the beco?  I definitely want to consider every angle before making a purchase.

    Thanks!

It's more comfortable and easier to get on and off. The Beco always hurt my shoulders. I didn't like the insert on the Beco and DS never seemed very happy in it. The fact that it takes two hands to unbuckle the Beco was difficult for me because I have arthritis.

He lived in the Ergo once i got it.

  • Thanks, I appreciate the info.  I'm so torn, I guess I've got to find a retail location where I can actually try them on myself.  What I am really going for is comfort, I've had two babies in a bjorn and I just won't do it again.  But both of my kids have really loved facing out once they can hold their heads up, so the only drawback to the ergo for me is that they can't face out.  Hmm, decisions.  Thanks again.

  • I LOVE my Beco Gemini. We use it daily, whether on walks around the neighborhood, the grocery store, or just to calm him down in the house. He usually falls asleep in it. He is 16 lbs and it is still very comfortable with the wide, padded shoulder straps and much of the weight is distributed to your hips since it is an ergonomic carrier. I loved that you didn't need an infant insert, we just stuck 8.6 lb DS in their very soon after birth. While the buckles are two-handed, once you learn the mechanism and get comfortable with it, it is easy to take the baby in and out and put on and take off by yourself. One of my favorite purchases and I've recommended it to everyone. The only thing is we got black and it gets very lint-y. I would get another color and definitely a pattern!

  • It really is personal preference. I have had an Ergo Sport, Beco Butterfly II and and a Boba 3G. I hated Ergo. It just didn't fit my petite frame at all and was always falling off. I like the Beco Butterfly II but the internal harness irritates me a bit it's just an extra step. I bought it when DS was about a year old, though, b/c I found a screaming deal on a used one. It is still comfortable for him and I at 18 months old and I like it, but don't love the extra step. My favorite, handsdown, has been the Boba 3G. Again, I bought the Boba when DS was about a year old, so I haven't tried it on a little.

I liked Ergo initially but we used it for less than 6 months before it became impossible for me to get comfortable and DS felt like he was falling out. I never realized how comfortable I could be until I started trying other carriers.

There is not an insert that goes with the Beco Gemini, it fits infants from 8lbs and up. The ergo needs an infant insert. That said I beyond love my Beco Gemini, it's very comfortable, user friendly, both my sons have liked it and I am also able to nurse in it! Definitely would buy it again!

  • I wouldn't personally write off the Butterfly 2 yet if you're considering using it a lot when your LO is small.  I did and loved it.  It feels very, very secure for a newborn.
