To epidural or not...

I know it is very early... But is anyone thinking about not getting and epidural. STMs out there... Did any of you skip the epidural? If so, how did you do?

I am not looking for horror stories.... I just don't like the idea of my legs being numb.  I need to do more research, but in the mean time i am looking for some bumpie input

Thanks ladies

My legs did feel kinda numb but not in the uncomfortable tingling, leg falling asleep feeling, just the pleasant no pain kind of feeling lol.

  • With my first (I was 19) I went into labor on my own. 6ish hours of labor & no epi. With my second I had to be induced. At 6 hours of pitocin contractions I caved, the epi helped a lot. 3 hours later he was out. I am hoping I don't have to be induced again. I'll keep an open mind again with this one.

ETA: I would love to go without an epi again, but I'm not against it at all.

  • I'll be watching your answers!  I'm a STM who had an emergency c-section where I was completely knocked.  I didn't feel a thing! lol.  So I have found an OB that's on board with VBACs and am seriously considering doing this, but don't know if I'm brave enough to go all natural!  So I'd love to see some of the responses!

  • Loved my epidural and will be having it agaun. I labored without one until I was fighting the contractions.

  • With my first I planned my entire pregnancy not to have one and went into L&D telling the nurses that I wanted to avoid it, but I ended up with an induction  that was pretty rough and ended up getting an epidural just so I could relax and let the medicine work.

When we found out that we were going to be induced, I did do research and reading so that I would know what to expect and how they worked so that I wasn't figuring that all out in the heat of the moment. For that alone, I was thankful.

  • I didn't have time for an epidural by the time I got to the hospital, I was 10 cm dilated and fully effaced. I am not saying definitely not this time, but I would like to try without it. It's unpleasant, no getting around that. It depends on your threshold for pain.

  • I had one with Aiden. It really wasn't bad at all, however this time I plan on telling them I am trying to go without, because I kept getting comments about 'don't be a hero if you are getting it anyways' I may get another one, but I won't tell them that, because I HATED those comments.

  • My labor with DS was very, very quick so I wouldn't have had time even if I wanted one. I plan on having another med free birth if possible, now that I know I what I'm up against.

  • I attempted to have a natural birth last time but, my 46 hour non-progressive labor did not allow for it. I will be attempting a natural birth again this time around.
  • My legs were not completely numb...I could still move my legs. The only completely numb part was between my belly button and upper thigh. When I pushed I was surprised that I was able to help pull my legs up...they felt really heavy though. I had planned on not having an epi but since I was induced they wouldn't let me walk around and the contractions were just so awful and there was no way to relieve any pain so I caved, but I also pushed for 2 and a half hours and I am happy that I didn't have to feel all of that for that long.

OH and I had an emergency c-section and since I already had an epi placed it was super easy to prep me for surgery.

  • I forgot to mention that I had extremely bad back pain for 2 weeks at the epi injection site.
  • I had one. With back labor and pitocin, I could only get to 7 cm before I wanted to scream! My legs only felt slightly numb and I could still feel the contractions; they went from a 10 to a manageable 3.

  • I went in with an open mind if I was doing okay without one I wouldn't get it, if the pain was too much I would. I ended up being induced 10 days late, and labour came on hard and fast. Getting an epidural was one of the best decisions I ever made. I actually enjoyed by labour/DD's birth and look back at it positively, instead of as a traumatic experience.

I was a little worried about being bed bound, I had pictured myself walking, bouncing on the ball, showering etc. When the contractions were coming right on top of each other there was no way I was doing any of that anyway!

My advice is to go in with an open mind. If you don't want one that is fine, but don't feel like you've somehow failed if you end up wanting one.

  • I was in labor (actually admitted, not counting the early labor before I went to the hospital) for 40hrs.  During that time they had to replace the epi once because my one leg did go numb, but once it was fixed I regained feeling pretty quick and had no trouble knowing when it was time to push.

  • I've had them in the past because of induction and c/s, but I absolutely hate the dead legs, and the effects last for hours and hours after the birth for me. But I understand that that's unusual. I've also had a numb spot in my lower back for several months after each of my births. Again, not typical. But I'd like to avoid all that this time, assuming I'm able to do a VBAC.

  • Also, I was never able to feel the contractions or push effectively because I was numb from my chest to my toes. I think my labors would have been much quicker and less difficult to recover from if I'd had some feeling. I think they offer a cervical block or something that takes the edge off but doesn't numb everything.

  • I had one with the first and didn't have one with the second. I won't be having one this time either. My back hurts too badly afterwards and I had a reaction to it while it was in and itched horribly the entire time to the point where I pulled part of the tube out by accident. No this is not common but I just was so sore for months afterwards that I won't be getting it this time. I have enough control to handle the pain and get through it without.

ETA: My first was an induction and I think had I gone natural with him I wouldn't have wanted an epi either but the contractions with an induction are so much more intense.

    imageimageimageimage

  • I did not have one last time. Labor/delivery was very intense but also very quick DS was born about an hour after we got to the hospital so it was definitely manageable.

I am hoping to have an unmedicated birth again this time. I plan to look into pain management techniques like breathing, meditation, etc. this time. I think that would have helped me last time.

  • I labored at home with DS for 9 hours, then went to the hospital. I was at a 7 and 90 effaced. They offered the epidural right away and I declined. I labored at the hospital for another 6 hours and walked a lot. At that point, I still hadn't changed baby was faceup and they wanted to break my water. I was fine with that but requested the epidural too. I had gone into a complete panic. I'm a very petite girl and the ultrasounds kept showing that baby was going to be over 9 lbs...I was terrified of delivering a huge baby. My epidural was perfect! I was concerned about the numb legs too and my legs were like jelly but I didn't care. I was able to rest a bit, which I feel was important. My baby didn't turn over for another 9 hours and I didn't progress until that time. I delivered him an hour and a half after he turned over. I know epidurals have risks and are often blamed in many circles for csections but I'm convinced I would have been too exhausted to push after my 26 hourlong labor. I will probably get an epidural with this one too.

I agree with others about doing your research and deciding what it best for you. Don't be swayed by others' horror stories one way or the other as there is always an awful experience from someone.

  • I had a water birth and had gas air as pain relief. Water birth was lovely and soothing and the only other option to me was pethodine as I was in a birth centre which was midwifery led. I'm from the uk and have noticed that epidural a seem quite popular in America and some people call me crazy for not having one lol! It's quite funny how different the procedures are in different parts of the world x
  • I will be getting one again. Only thing I didn't like was trying to walk to the bathroom when it was wearing off. Strange feeling!

        image

  • I was in labor for 22 hours.after not progressing they induced me with petocin and I was in hard labor for about 7 hours. It was very hard and tiring, but I refused the epi. By the time I was exhausted I wanted it But I was ready to push. It was tough, real tough but doable. This time I plan in refusing the epi again but I will Absolutely refuse pitocin.

    This EXACTLY.

I'm getting one again this time. I will labor without at home for awhile, then into the hospital and get the epi.

Like I said in the previous post - I'm going in backwards with a bulls-eye painted on my back and an arrow that says, "insert epi here".

  • I've actually thought a lot about this since we started TTC last year, and I would really prefer to not have an epidural. I'd like to go natural. However, this is my first pregnancy, so we'll see what happens when I go into labor.

  • I had one and it was wonderful.

I did think about the numb legs freaking me out, but once I was at 6 cm, I didnt give a sh*t about that, I just wanted pain relief!

Getting the epidural wasnt nearly as bad as I thought it would be.  And, my son was fine, wide awake and alert .  GL!

  • I ad a planned c/s with my 1st and was so miserable from the drugs that I vowed to avoid them at all costs. I also had the numb back and still have a spot where there is no feeling.

My 2nd was an entirely natural VBAC and was the most amazing experience. You can't just go in saying "we'll see" though. You need to plan, understand how your body works, how to work with it, etc. I also had a doula. I can honestly say there was never a time the pain was unmanageable, but I had prepared for it and my doula helped me find positions to relieve pressure. Afterwards, since my body had been uninterrupted, I had the most amazing natural high which gave me a burst of energy and helped me bond and breastfeed my baby easier than before. In fact, it was such an amazing feeling that i told my DH i wantef to give birth daily. LOL Oh, and I was in labor for 32hrs, so it was no quick and easy labor. I plan to do it exactly the same this time. The way I figured before, even if it is the worst pain ever, I know it's temporary and for a good cause, so I can push through.

If you decide it's what you want, check out hypnobirthing. The breathing really helped! And IMO, ever mom should read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. I learned so much about my body and it completely empowered me!

  • I got one with DD but oly after I labored for a while.  My water broke at home just before 2am.  We got to the hospital at 3 am and for all settled in.  We breathed and walked through contractions and I got in the lg soaker tub (heaven).  Then I couldn't take it anymore.  I got the epi around 10 am.  I rested and progressed slowly after that.  When I started pushing I still felt tremendous pressure.  I ended up with an unplanned c section - after 5 hours of pushing DD wasnt coming out :-( then I started running a fever and her heart rate kept dropping.  My water had been broken for 18 hrs by then and my hospital won't go 24 due to risk of infection so we did e c section. I was so exhausted by then all I could do was lay there and cry.  It was a horrible experience up to the c section.  I was in recovery and nursing DD less than two hours after surgery.  I'm opting for a repeat c section this time.  Even if I went for a vbac I would get the epi again though.
  • I'm kind of going with a two-way plan this time. If I labor more than 12 hours without progress (last time it was 60 hours) then I'll get the epidural. No way I'm going through that hell again. Plus, I liked the epidural. It felt amazing to get some sleep and some relief.

The only thing is, no matter what, I'm going to refresh on pain coping techniques. You'll be in labor for some amount of time, and if you're able to cope with it, no matter what your medication decision, you'll feel more control. I thought that was the worst part---towards the end I couldn't take it anymore and I just started losing control. That's when I knew I needed the epi.

  • I had a VBAC with my second and my OB highly recommended an epidural in case I had to have an emergency c/s.

It was such a relief! I am always amazed by women who go natural. I will most definitely have an epidural this time as well.

I thought I'd be totally numb with an epi, but that's not how it works (if it's done right). your legs aren't numb. You can move them easily. They just feel tingly like they are kind of asleep.

  • I was scheduled for a c-section and ended up having a vaginal delivery at the last second, so I wasn't prepared to make the decision. I said yes to the epidural because it was recommended, but it was by far the worst part of my labor. I seemed to have a very unusual experience, but it took 30 minutes to get it into my back and caused severe pain. Ultimately, only my feet went numb, but I had trouble laboring because my back hurt too much to lay down. (I ended up being sort of tilted to one side.)

The actual delivery hurt, but it wasn't intolerable and the pain subsided quickly. The spot from the epidural still hurts 22 months later, though. Again, this is pretty unusual so you might have a completely different experience and I think it's great you're thinking about it so early! I really wish I had spent more time on the decision because I think I would have skipped it...

  • Got one the first time and will be this time as well. One thing I will be skipping is the IV pain meds. They did nothing for the pain and just made me feel out of it and almost drunk. That's my only regret about the entire LD process.

  • The epidural took away the contraction and the pushing pain for me. The pushing pain/ring of fire was what I was most afraid of, so I was very happy not to feel it.
