STMs: different with second child ?

For those who have had success BFing one or more children...

How different if at all were the subsequent experiences?   DD1 was a quick learner and we had no issues.   I don't want to assume that this past success will indicate future success but am curious to how how much was parental learning curve vs. the individual child's differences? Do I need an LCD on speed dial like the first time?

TIA!

  • DD was super easy and I nursed for 14 months. DS has had some latching issues and I have needed more help from a LC this time. Also, you forget how I nurse an infant. It is so much harder than nursing an older baby even if they are easy. You have to teach the baby how to eat. That being said having experience has really helped me this time around, especially since I don't stress about some things and recognize when to call for help.

  • DD1 wouldn't latch at all and had to eat EPed milk.

DD2 eats EBF like a champ.

  • I had major issues the first time but this time has gone fairly easily. Each kid is different for sure, DS has reflux so it is a whole different set of issues, but there was a confidence I brought in that helped immensely.

  • Not sure my experience is the one you're looking for, but I had trouble with my first (DS) from the beginning. He had a poor latch, slow start, slow weight gain, jaundice, so I had to start supplementing with formula from about Day 6, and I didn't know enough about maintaining my supply while supplementing, so it tanked. Also, he used to spit up just about every drop of BM that he did get.

My second (DD) had a little bit of latch issues in the beginning (had to use a nipple shield) and also slow weight gain, but by the time the doctor told us to supplement, I was able to do so with expressed milk. She will be 10 months on Tuesday and has not had formula.

Good luck with your second! I think if it went pretty good with your first, you shoulf have a pretty good chance of succeeding with this one!

  • Well, every baby is different so I did have an LC number just in case. But when DD was born I had forgotten how to latch her on and like PP said newborns are hard! But you get the hang of it a lot quicker. Turns out DD was a power eater from week one - I used to nurse DS for 45 minutes and with her it was never more than 15. But you are right to be cautious but at the same time the odds are in your favor!
