Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4 month old spitting up almost after every bottle

For the past 2 weeks my LO has been spitting up after almost every bottle. I tried keeping him upright for 30 min after eating, burping in e middle of bottle and even tried feeding him less oz per feeding, but he still seems to spit up.  Anyone else having this problem? Any recommendations?

  • is it a lot or a little?  My daughter is 3.5 months and is teething and so she drools all of the time.  After she eats she spits up, but it is mostly drool and some breast milk.

  • Does he get fussy at all? When you lay him on his back after a feeding does he cry? My LO would spit up after every single bottle and then one day she started to scream when we put her completely on her back to change her etc. So we brought her in because we thought it could be reflux or ear infection. anyway after that ramble it ended up being reflux and he gave her Zantac to take two times a day and it has helped SO much. Could always check with your Ped.

  • He does drool a lot too.  The spit up is kind of a lot, but he doesn't seem to be in any pain or get fussy from it.  It just kind of spills out and he goes back to whatever he was playing with. We have our 4month well visit next week. Guess I can ask his doc then.

I would just bring it up to him. We brought it up to our ped when LO was little and spitting up every time she would eat. She didn't get fussy at all. He explained to us about GURD and the spitting up could lead to that eventually which is uncomfortable for them. She actually just got diagnosed not that long ago. He also explained that most babies will spit up quite a bit, looks like it's the whole bottle but if he is gaining weight and isn't uncomfortable then he should be okay. Just better to check then so you don't have to make another trip.

  • Our LO has reflux and has been on Zantac since 3 weeks old.  Our pediatric GI told us that reflux can actually hit it's "peak" between 4-6 months... I'm not 100% sure why, but what your describing sounds just like our DS.  There's just constantly liquid coming out of his mouth.... Doesn't matter how long we keep him upright after feeds.  The Zantac had helped with his pain from the acid..and now we have what the Dr called a "happy spitter", meaning he spits up but doesn't seem bothered by it.

I would definitely mention it to your Dr.

  • DD went through this at 3 months.  Our pedi suggested switching her formula to a sensitive brand, better for her tummy.  She stopped spitting up after that.  Is your LO on formula, and if so what kind?

  • Yes. He's on gerber good start gentle
  • We are having this issue and she's breastfed - we've pretty much ruled out it being anything I've eaten and I'm going to ask about reflux at her appt next week.  I had reflux, my dad has a problem with his "flap" and thus has reflux, and many members of my mom's family has it - so I figure its possible / likely  - she doesn't seem to upset - but its constant - and it doesn't matter what I do or don't do - I've tried it all (smaller, more frequent feeds, longer more spaced out feedings, upright for a half hour, not jostling, etc)
