I have one that' s been weighing on me. I judge all my fb friends who keep posting about putting prayer back in schools. Everyone is not the same religion and no child should be forced to pray to a religion they are not part of or made to feel singled out by others' religious practices in public school. You as a parent have plenty of time and opportunity at home to work with your children on the spiritual upbringing. Besides, just because a prayer is not done over the intercom doesn't mean your child can't pray to himself. My son goes to a multicultural school and all the children are not Christian.
I don't mean to piss anyone off about the weight thing.
Nobody has taken prayer out of school. There are prayer groups at school here but it is an after/ before school club/ group.
On another note:
I think that privatizing education would be a great idea. We pay taxes to run the schools, why not issue every student a voucher or credit to go to a school of their choosing. In a free market the school systems would have to learn how to balance a budget and produce excellent students to compete. As a plus the schools could cater to people's preferences such as: an emphasis on religion, sports, liberal arts, academics. We already have charter schools somewhat like this, we even have a school of environmental studies that is ran in cooperation with the MN zoo.

Well said! When I was in school they just did a "moment of silence" every morning and you could either pray or think or just there for a minute. I think that would be ok, but no forced prayer time.
We kind of already do that, Penny. That's how charter schools work. They take the money away from the public school system for every child that goes there.
Yes, but the ones around here are still ran by the state. I would love to see them totally privatized. Both my sister and my mother work in our school district and they complain about how inefficient the schools are with funds. Yes, they would eventually lose their jobs if public schools were abandoned, but they are both great workers and affective and would probably find more success in privatized schools. I guess this is just another way I view things different than most of you on here... I would much rather trust big business than big government.
ETA: Even though I live in a great district I am still dissatisfied with the schools. When your child has an awesome teacher it is great, but wait until they get some whack job/ or someone who doesn't give a d-mn. You can not do much about it and your kid has just wasted a year of their education. I have been on both sides of the spectrum. It is like drawing straws. Just this year I have spent endless hours trying to make up for a craptastic math teacher, and have been so frustrated I want to slap the bush. The administration can't get rid of these losers. I'm sorry I have seen how the government works, through school, MH who worked for DOD and my MIL worked for the fed. gov. up until she retired.
I am very fiscally responsible and I hate seeing my taxes squandered.
Weight judgements suck, I pray every day at work (I teach), and I judge people who always have to be a downer about how "horrible" children become. For example, I posted on FB last night about how DD was doing something cute, and I got all these "just wait" comments about how horrible she will be someday.

I guess I'm confused because there are private schools. E goes to Catholic school and we have to fill out a form that gets turned into the county/state with our household income and how many school age children we have and what public school district we are in. I have no idea how that affects our taxes but I am pretty sure when I was in HS my parents got some kind of tax credit for me being in private school, for books maybe?

You could always side with your brother and opt to homeschool :P
(In case anybody doesn't remember the discussion last week, I am making an internet joke )
I actually do think juice is bad! maybe this is a FFFC but really it isn't much different than soda or candy sugar wise.
Ok, say I take an orange and give it to Li, everyone would praise me for giving my child a healthy snack. Now, I take that same exact orange and juice it... How on earth is that any different? The orange isn't magically turned into caramel when it hits the juicer. Fruit has natural sugars. The sugar will be the same in solid or liquid form.
I think comparing juice to a candy bar is ludicrous. It is not the same as soda or candy, it is not refined, processed sugar.

Right but the majority of people aren't giving their babies fresh home squeezed juice. Most juice from grocery stores have little nutritional value and added sugar. It's not the same thing as giving your kid a piece of fruit. When you juice a fruit even at home you are removing the fiber and other nutrition and extracting the sugar. Sugar is sugar regardless of how "natural" it is.
I'm on my phone, so I can't edit posts and I don't want to be yelled at for quote tree... So Penny, NYC public schools are like that. A lot of them are charter with different focuses. You have to apply for the ones you want, you may not get in where you want or even anywhere close to where you live. Let me tell you, it is a shiiit show.
We have friends going through the process and it is a nightmare. Half the reason we moved out of manhattan is so we didn't have to deal with it.

In this day and age, the majority of juice I see in the grocery store is labeled organic or 100 percent pure juice with nothing added. Unless you are buying Capri Sun.

Fine, I give up, I'll just home school them. Who was it I was ragging on last week about home schooling? Well whoever you are make room I'm jumping aboard your ship.

Well then we must be shopping at different stores. And the majority of kids I see drinking juice are drinking Sunny D which isn't even juice or Capri Sun. And regardless of how organic it is it doesn't change the fact that juicing a fruit is less nutritious and higher in sugar than fresh fruit.

I buy Tropicana... Hardly fancy juice from a hoity toity supermarket.
I judge SAHMs who homeschool their kids when they themselves are not very educated. If I saw one more status on facebook about how glad a person was that they homeschooled after the CT shooting, but had basic spelling errors I was going to scream.

I'm not sure about the arguments for kids, but for adults the argument is that the orange has fiber that goes along with the juice, filling you up. It's not just empty calories. People don't usually have a 4 oz. serving of juice, they pour themselves a 24 oz. tumbler.
A way to make it better is to serve it over ice w/ either vodka or tequila Therefore, less juice for less calories and sugar.
I buy Tropicana... Hardly fancy juice from a hoity toity supermarket.
An 8oz glass of Tropicana Pure has 23 grams of sugar and is missing a lot of the nutrition content of fresh fruit 8oz of Coke is like 26 grams of sugar. A medium orange has around 13 grams of sugar. You asked how fresh fruit was different than juice, that's how.

Then it's a good thing I give her coke instead of juice.
This is my least favorite stage thus far. I was warned that 1218 months is hard, and I agree. Maybe it's because I'm pregnant, tired, bloated and moody, but still!
My parents say my precocious daughter has started the terrible 2's early. The tantrums suck!
I'm right there with you ladies. DD has been a crank lately. I'm hoping its because I'm hormonal and things have been crazy lately. I know it won't get better immediately after the baby comes, but I'm hoping in a few months, we'll be happy go lucky again.
Recent studies have shown that sugars are processed by the body differently. High fructose corn syrup has been linked to heart disease. Pretty sure oranges have not ever been linked to that, juiced or not.

What about grapefruits? I prefer grapefruit.
Do NOT eat grapefruit. It interferes with a lot of medications and it tastes like ass.
And we know how familiar you are with the taste of ass...

Umm an orange and orange juice are two different things.
1. Oranges have pulp. I guess you could make your kid drink the juice with pulp, but a raw orange still has more pulp than juice. The pulp contains flavonoids. I assume people think orange juice is healthy because of vitamin C correct? Well, the reason that an ORANGE is so healthy is yes becuase of vitamin C but also because the flavonoids work in conjuction to help your body use and absorb the vitamin C properly. When you take out the flavonoids you are inhibiting your bodies full vitamin C absorbing potential.
2. Eating fruit vs. juice allows you to get fiber. Even drinking orange juice with the pulp added back in isn't going to get you the same amount of pulp. As it is usually random pulp from other oranges.
3. Juice has been shown to raise blood sugar faster than raw fruit.
4. Juice has a higher level of concentrated sugar and calories than raw fruit. For example, adding about a third more calories in the juice variety (84 calories versus 62). Another example? 120 calories worth of plain old apples have 24 grames of sugar. 120 calories of juice have 30 grams of sugar.
Anyway, yes you are right. It is not refined processed sugar. But sugar is sugar and refined sugar or no it can impact your body in similar ways.

I am not really anti-juice (although we don't drink it and I don't plan on giving it to DS) but to assume it is equal to raw fruit or that it is healthy just because it is made of fruit ignores a lot of real facts. Not to mention it is tied to obesity https://www.theage.com.au/news/national/fruit-juice-doubles-risk-of-obesity/2007/03/19/1174152970864.html
