Natural Birth

Feeling hopeless. (Vent)

I am over due by a week and I am feeling so hopeless.

I have had a great pregnancy and being overdue is not the problem. The problem is that now my doctor scheduled an induction for next week Thursday, due to policy. She had originally told me that I would probably be early, so we've been waiting for this little one for quite some time. I have made barely any progress as far as dilating and effacing. I am about a centimeter. The worst part is that I wanted to do this naturally and I feel so betrayed by my body. I know things can progress quickly but I feel under SO much pressure to go into labor naturally before that date.

I am terrified of being induced! And family and friends just don't get it, all they say is "just get induced, it won't matter" "what are you waiting for? Who cares about natural?" I am so frustrated!!! It matters to me! It matters that I can give my body and baby the best starting chance. There is no medical reason, yet, to get induced and I find family and friends the worst to deal with because they are not educated about what can happen and side effects.

Anyways, I just needed to vent. I'm trying not to get too sad, trying to stay positive. Thanks!

  • I am so sorry you're having to go through this. If it helps at all, though, remember this:

Despite the statistics and the horror stories about induction, and although we are all committed to the idea of going into labor naturally, there ARE many stories of women who are induced who have otherwise normal births: one of my close friends had a successful natural birth after an induction, in fact. Please appreciate the fact that "increased probability of intervention" does not mean that YOU will definitely experience the worst possible scenario. The disappointment you feel is natural, but if you're allowing all the "what-ifs" to stress you out even more, that won't be good for you, your baby, or your eventual labor, whenever it happens.

I hope that you go into labor naturally, on your own, but if it's not to be, I hope that you are able to relax and trust your body just as much as you would have without induction. Good luck and best wishes!

  • So sorry to hear that, I was feeling like that through my pregnancy. I wanted to avoid induction at all costs and go natural and was frustrated just at that time with people telling me I was nuts and "why would you do that when they have medicine?"

As mentioned in the PP, it could be that you could still go as natural as possible after induction. I would just say stay as positive as you can, getting too stressed about it could cause your body to need even more help through the process that you would like to avoid if possible. Good luck, hope all goes well for you!

  • PPs have said some great things already, but I just wanted to add that A LOT can change in a week, especially when you're talking about week 41 to week 42.  The vast majority of women will go into labor on their own by 42 weeks.  Even though you haven't made much progress with dilation/effacement it doesn't mean that you couldn't go into labor later tonight or tomorrow.

GL!  I hope you go into labor on your own soon just so you don't have to worry about it!

  • When you reach week 42, there is an increased risk of fetal demise.  Nobody knows why this is true but that is a medical indication to induce.  many people continue to have natural births with inductions, you can too! Keep your head up!
