Can I Vent??? Childcare related **Updated**

So I've been off work since 12/20.  DH and I cashed in DH's all of his airline miles to send our nanny to see her DH in Brazil for Christmas.  She was supposed to leave on Sunday the 30th, fly overnight, and be home on the 31st.  She was supposed to come back to work today.

We got a call on the 30th that her ride to the airport hit a cow, and that she missed her flight.  We needed to schedule another one for her, since it was all done with DH's miles.  So he did.  At that point, I told him that I had a bad feeling about her return to work on Wednesday...

She sent a text last night saying her car wouldn't start, but that AAA was coming early so she should be all set.  She doesn't have to pick DD up from preschool until 11, and I WFH today so I usually drop her off.

Surprise, surprise... just got another text that her car won't start again, so she's got to wait at the shop (where they towed her car) to get it fixed.

Not at all what I needed today after being out for 11 days!!!

THIS!  Do you think she isn't going to come back at all?

ETA: did she need to renew her visa when she went home?  I know when our au pair went home she had to renew it, and it took almost two weeks.

  • Nanny is American, her DH is Brazilian.  So she didn't have to renew anything.

She's still waiting for her car.  Luckily DD was in preschool for much of the morning, so I was able to get a good amount of work done.  She's resting now, and a neighbor is coming over in a while to cover until DH gets home.

I'm so annoyed.  I get that stuff happens, but if the situation was reversed, and my employer had just sent me to freaking BRAZIL to spend Christmas with my DH that I hadn't seen in almost 9 months, I would be doing EVERYTHING in my power to get to work on my first day back.

There has to be something else going on... it's not like they don't have taxi's in Brazil, she could make it to the airport on time if she really wanted to.  Her DH is still there, tell him to deal with the car.

Apparently her DH lives in a small town 5 hours from the closest airport.  He doesn't have a car, and wrecked his motor cycle the week before she got there.

So she's supposedly back here, but her car wouldn't start this morning.  If she had given me some notice, I would have picked her up.  But she didn't.  So I scrambled, picked up DD, 1/2 paid attention to her while I worked, and got her down for a nap.

I think I'm most annoyed because when I told her I got coverage for the rest of the afternoon, she didn't respond.  She didn't apologize for the inconvenience.  Nothing.

She's our 3rd nanny in 3 years.  A center really won't work for us.  DH and I said that we're done after this nanny, but things had been going pretty well, so I thought we were in good shape for a while.  We're not ready for me to quit.

    Ugh.

  • Sometimes cars don't start after sitting for a while.  But that's not an excuse for her not to be at work.  I hope she is just having a little bump in the road and she'll get back to working out for you guys.

  • Um...yeah. Pretty sure if my employer had just been generous enough to use their miles to send me to Brazil to visit my DH, nothing would have kept me from coming in to work today. I get that cars don't start but she should have found a ride, taken the bus, taken a cab, whatever. She should have figured something out, I would be pissed. Hopefully, she'll be in tomorrow with profuse apologies.
  • Yikes. I would be super pissed.

     Let us know what happens.

    Good luck!

  • So she called me last night, close to tears. She said she felt terrible about the inconvenience she caused, especially since we'd been so nice to her with the plane tickets. She told me that they figured out the issue with the car, but that it wouldn't be fixed until the end of the day today. She'd had to walk home - 3 miles in 15 degree weather - from the mechanic.

So she's back at work today. I picked her up and loaned her my car (which is usually just parked at the train station all day anyway). She thanked me, apologized, etc.

So I'm feeling better about everything. I just felt taken advantage of yesterday, especially since she seemed so unapologetic in her initial communications.

So thanks for listening to me whine!!!

  • So glad everything worked out and today is better day. When I was reading through without realizing it was 'yesterday's problem' I was going to say, "Go ahead, be annoyed and vent here, but it really sounded like your nanny was just having a bad day too, and I was hoping everything would work out quickly."

Since all that is over, I still had to reply in regards to the cow. I snort-laughed when I read that in your OP, but being from a very rural, farming community, it's not unheard of here. I've actually been in my car, on the road, surrounded by black cows....at night. Not a good situation!

BTW - super, super generous gift you gave your nanny - I doubt she has plans to leave you anytime soon!
