High-Risk Pregnancy

GD question

So I had my education for GD today, my head is spinning with all this information. I get the testing part. My confusion is with the carb. and calorie counting. I am limited to 15g of carbs and 2000 calories a day. 3 carbs , 1-2 non starchy veggies, 3oz meat and 2 fats each meal excluding breakfast 3 carbs 2oz meat and 2 fats. Snacks are 2 carbs each.

For dinner I had

3 oz beef brisket

slice of bread

salad with Italian dressing

1/2c diced peaches

and green beans

with crystal light

Snack

4 sheets of graham crackers  serving size was 24g for 2 sheets ( based on what I read in my book would be 1.5 carbs and round it to 1 carb)

water

I'm lost on what to do for breakfast I remember her saying

1 low fat yogurt

1 slice of bread with butter

1 scrambled egg

and I think I fruit like and apple

does this sound about right.

Am I doing any of this right?

Re: GD question

  • Looks like your requirements are different than mine. I've noticed when I eat fruit with a meal it really spikes my sugar. Your snack seems high--4 sheets of graham crackers would be 48 g, way above the 30 you're allotted. Keep trying different foods and read all food labels. It's a lot of trial and error to see what works for you. Good luck!

  • For breakfast I have natures own, honey wheat bagel thins, toasted with two egg whites scrambled with a slice of cheese on top and butter on the bagel. A cup of tea and a greek yogurt with fruit.

I pretty much have that every day.

My snacks are a string cheese and almonds, half an apple and 2tbs of peanut butter, or a zone bar.

the book told me to take what ever the total carb number is 24g and divide by 15 to get the number of carbs which is 1.5.

Maybe I was a loud to have 3 sheets, she did the whole fake food display and I seem to remember 3 crackers. Between my 2 yr old driving me nuts and trying to pay attention I feel I lost something.  Granted I didn't start this whole thing till 6pm since my class was 230p. My sugar was 81 then.

Does the breakfast part sound about right at least? She said no cereal period or juice.

  • All I know is my body didn't like any fruit especially before noon and I could not have any processed carbs no matter what carb count was.

My breakfast was usually whole wheat english muffin with peanut butter and a string cheese.  I would also have a jimmy deans delite sandwich with and extra slice of cheese.

  • I would have done 2 sheets of grahams, not 4 and added peanut butter. Always pair your carbs with protein. How were your numbers after these meals and snacks? I stick to 30g carbs or less for breakfast and snacks and up to 45 for lunch and dinner and at least 10 g of protein

  • But you had 4 sheets of crackers, which means you have to take the 24g and x2 which is 48g. Also, is the box saying sheets or crackers, big difference there. My dietician said a cracker is not the sheet but each little perforation.

Think of it this way. 15g is 1 serving, that's what your book is telling you. If you're limited to 3 carbs per meal then that is 45g. Just pick one and roll with it. So, for me I can have 2-3 servings of carb for breakfast which equals 30-45g of carbs for that meal. You'll get used to doing the conversions. But you've got to be careful reading the labels. Just b/c a serving of bread is 2 slices and 20g does NOT mean that's a serving of carbs. That's 1 serving + 5g. Confused yet? It's ok, you'll get it.

I wouldn't do a fruit for breakfast, my dietician and endocrinologist both said that's just a bad idea. But if your #s come back fine then that's great, have fruit. I typically eat my fruit as a snack personally. 1 cup of fruit = 1 serving/15g. For breakfast I eat 1-2 slices of toast (depends on my fastings and how hungry I am), 2 eggs scrambled with cheese, and 2 slices of bacon. I don't have set amounts of veggies, meat, etc per meal. I was told about 2000 calories/day but I honestly don't keep track of it. I eat when I'm hungry, follow my GD diet guidelines, and as long as my #s are normal I don't fret but that's me.

Just take it 1 day, 1 meal at a time.  And always pair your carbs with protein (cheese, peanut butter, nuts, etc...)

  • Don't always go by the book they give you.  Go by the label first and the book second.  It's more accurate to follow the label.

I was told to have starch and protein for breakfast and no fruit or dairy.  It sucks!  But I have a scrambled egg and either an english muffin or 2 Eggo waffles.    My snacks (except for bedtime) are only 15, so I have 1 sheet of a graham cracker (12 carbs) and a cheese stick or something simple like that.  Dinner varies on what I'm feeling like...

right now I am only able to test two times a day before breakfast and after lunch. I only have enough supplies for 2 days. My insurance requires authorization and have to use a medical supplier. Said it could be 3-5 days.

    Readings

    Pm- 81

    Am- 87

not to bad they want my fasting between 60-90mg and after meals no higher then 120mg.

Im still adjusting to all this, I took my sugar early because I was to the point in felt light headed. I have hypoglycemia pre pregnancy.adjusting to this meal plan is hard. She said I can eat anything I want except cereal and juice, not even Cheerios. I just have to count carbs.

Did anyone get headaches when they first started the meal plan?

It says 2 sheets per serving, but yet it says 8 crackers too. There is only on dividing line on them though. She told me fruit was fine just no juice or cereal. I was thinking low fat light fruit yogurt no carbs toast with butter, 1 scrambled egg with a little cheese and an apple. Oh and she told me absolutely no bacon not even turkey. As far as free foods like green beans or salad do I need to measure them? I kinda gorge on green beans.

Im going to call her later to clarify it, DD was not making it easy. The appointment was literally last min.

  • Green beans, as do all vegetables, have carbs and need to be counted.  Essentially, you need to count every carb since a little more here and there adds up.
  • As far as the headache goes if your diet was very carb heavy before it is common to get headaches as you reduce carbs. This can last up to 2 weeks as your body adjusts.

If you do yogurt, I would steer clear of yogurt that is presweetened, this will have a lot of carbs. Just get plain and add some nuts or cinnamon or even fruit if you tolerate it well. Low fat dairy will contain more carbs than full fat as sugar is often added to compensate for the lack of fat.

I am surprised by her stance on bacon, it is often cured with sugar, but the net result is very little carbs. Though it certainly isn't an everyday food, I do bacon with no issues.

As you can test more, you'll get an idea of how different foods affect you. Good luck! :
