Test results are in

Brennon does NOT have the amino acid disorder that he tested positive for in his initial newborn screening. Whatever caused the positive result has now resolved itself.  (Side note, it was actually branched-chain ketoaciduria AKA maple syrup urine disease that he tested positive for in the first test, not the urea cycle disorder that I originally thought. It's not as silly as it sounds, unfortunately. It's just called MSUD because it makes urine smell sweet.)

However, he does have congenital hypothyroidism. It still can affect his physical growth and cognitive development, but fortunately it can be treated with drugs rather than a complete and permanent lifestyle change that would occur with the MSUD. So we are extremely thankful for these results.

We'll have more specific testing done related to the hypothyroidism to determine the course of treatment. Thank you all for your concern when I first posted about this several weeks ago. I appreciate it.

Re: Test results are in

  • Glad the results were negative for the MSUD! :) that's great news!

  • So glad to hear about the results and that it is more manageable! I was actually going to message you and ask because I've been thinking about you guys and hoping for good news! Ironically, it may turn out that my LO may not have 3-mcc because his enzyme test came back normal! We had to do another biochemical test to see if it is elevated again. I'll continue to pray for your LO's good health!

  • SO glad to hear this! I know the newborn screening is necessary to catch things early but goodness at the stress they cause. I about lost my mind waiting for A's results on carnitine uptake deficiency to come back and I didn't have to wait as long as you.

I'm sure the hypothyroidism is still scary, even if it is treatable.

So glad it wasn't what the initial screening had detected. I have hypothyroidism (since I was 10, not congenital) and it is manageable on the meds. I did do some research on congenital hypothyroidism before A was born (just in case). How severe is it? I hope it's a milder case and he doesn't have any growth issues.
@sapatel1 -- we start the bloodwork on Monday to determine the severity and course of treatment. Our pediatrician seems to think it's mild, but honestly, I don't trust her. That's another long story, but I'll sum it up by saying that I didn't find out that there was even an issue until the initial results had been in her hands for 3.5 weeks. And even then, it was only because I called the pedi office due to an e-mail that I received from the state health dept.

@sapatel1, we are definitely considering a new pediatrician. Not only did we basically get overlooked, but a nurse at the pedi's office lied to me. Since the second newborn screen -- the one that the pedi had for 3.5 weeks -- fell through the cracks, I decided to follow up with the state periodically to make sure that didn't happen again. I called the state last Mon and they told me that the results would be released by Thurs. I called again on Thurs and they told me that my pedi's office had been contacted and that the results were available. So I called to let the pedi's office know and to ask them to get the results and call me back (since the state won't give them to a parent). Hours went by and I didn't hear anything, so I called back. The nurse told me that the state hadn't released the results yet, and I told her that I talked to a woman at the state office and she told me that they were available. She fumbled a bit and said she'd look into it and call me back. I called the state office AGAIN and was told that not only were the results available, but they had actually been released on MONDAY. So the nurse 100% lied to me just to try to get me off the phone. She probably didn't even look into it. A woman from the state faxed the results to the pedi's office and 5 minutes later, I had a phone call from a different nurse. I don't mind doing extra work to expedite things, but I will not tolerate being lied to.
