Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How much/often do you feed solids?

We started baby food a couple weeks ago.  We skipped the rice cereal, started with oatmeal and have tried sweet potatoes and green beans.  The past couple days DS has been eating solids once a day, about 1/2 of one one of those square gerber containers mixed with a little oatmeal and formula.  He is 5.5 months old and almost 20 lbs, so he's a big boy.  He's eating really good and most of what I feed him.  Should I be feeding him twice a day?  more or less baby food?  He probably still eats about 30-40 oz of formula each day.

Re: How much/often do you feed solids?

  • That sounds about right. 40 ounces sounds like a lot of formula though. Our pedi always said not to give her over 32 oz a day on a continued basis.

  • We just started DS 2 weeks ago when he turned 5 months. I basically feed him solids when he's interested in having some. I offer it and sometimes he doesn't want it, other times he's excited and takes the spoon and eats. I'd say he eats about 2oz of pures and he eats bananas just as they are. He eats maybe a quarter of a small banana. And also gnaws on apples and peaches and stuff, but I don't think he actually ends up consuming much. His pures are just carrot or just sweet potato, not sure if that affects how much he eats but he's never had oatmeal and I don't mix any liquids like BM into it. But he is nursing just as much as before solids.
  • Since I have finally had a chance to make a routine for DS and I the past few weeks here is our schedule: 5/6am 7 oz bottle, 9am oatmeal/cereal(Which ever one I grab first) mixed with 1oz formula then 6-7 oz bottle, 12pm 7 oz bottle, 3/4pm 7 oz bottle, 5/6 food and 7 0z bottle. He is hit or miss on the cereal in the morning. Some mornings he gobbles it all up, other mornings he cries until he gets his bottle. If I buy baby food I don't mix it with anything. If I make the baby food I either mix in formula or I mix in the leftover liquid from steaming. But that only depends on how smooth it it. I definitely am going with what DS wants. He really really loves to eat his evening meals. We have tried- Green beans, peas, avocado, squash, sweet potatoes, bananas, and apples. He has liked all of them so I will continue to give him his dinner meal each night!

  • I was recently wondering this same thing, though it is too early for us to start solids yet. I found on baby center a good article explaining it. Here's the link:

  • Pedi had told us twice a day. Honestly she could care less about morning spoon feeding. I've tried right after the bottle, mid morning and almost lunch time. She wants nothing to do with it, but 5 to 6 in the evening comes and she is all about the solids. So we have just rolled with it once a day. We started with cereal for a few days and then I have tried carrots and sweet potatoes. She eats about half of a baby bullet with half teaspoon of cereal mixed with formula at a feeding.

  • DD is almost six months and we feed her as much as she wants of one stage 1 food once a day.  At this age solid food is purely dessert, not supposed to be used for nutrition.  The point is just to get them used to different tastes/textures.  So I would not feed more than one container a day.  40 oz of formula is on the high side, but is still normal, especially for a big kid.  If he eats it without spitting up, keep giving it to him.

  • DS is 6 months old and started solids early so his pediatrician okay'd giving him the stage two food. He eats 2 of the stage two containers every day one for lunch and one with dinner. He still takes about 32oz give or take of formula a day

  • I give him about an ounce after his bottle of breastmilk in the morning and at night. I feed him the same amount in that bottle as the rest of his bottles throughout the day.
