We started baby food a couple weeks ago. We skipped the rice cereal, started with oatmeal and have tried sweet potatoes and green beans. The past couple days DS has been eating solids once a day, about 1/2 of one one of those square gerber containers mixed with a little oatmeal and formula. He is 5.5 months old and almost 20 lbs, so he's a big boy. He's eating really good and most of what I feed him. Should I be feeding him twice a day? more or less baby food? He probably still eats about 30-40 oz of formula each day.

Re: How much/often do you feed solids?
Since I have finally had a chance to make a routine for DS and I the past few weeks here is our schedule: 5/6am 7 oz bottle, 9am oatmeal/cereal(Which ever one I grab first) mixed with 1oz formula then 6-7 oz bottle, 12pm 7 oz bottle, 3/4pm 7 oz bottle, 5/6 food and 7 0z bottle. He is hit or miss on the cereal in the morning. Some mornings he gobbles it all up, other mornings he cries until he gets his bottle. If I buy baby food I don't mix it with anything. If I make the baby food I either mix in formula or I mix in the leftover liquid from steaming. But that only depends on how smooth it it. I definitely am going with what DS wants. He really really loves to eat his evening meals. We have tried- Green beans, peas, avocado, squash, sweet potatoes, bananas, and apples. He has liked all of them so I will continue to give him his dinner meal each night!
I was recently wondering this same thing, though it is too early for us to start solids yet. I found on baby center a good article explaining it. Here's the link:
