Frustrated with appointment - Dizzy

So I've been dizzy for a few days now. I finally called today and the nurse said to come in and they will check my ears and my BP. I wasn't able to see my normal doctor so I saw someone I've never seen before.  My BP was good, low. We talked about my GD numbers which have always been good.  They were slightly higher with the holidays but my regular OB was happy with them on Monday.  My last iron test was right under regular (by like .5) so they said that shouldn't be the problem.

So this DR tells me that I need to up my protein or at least make sure I'm getting enough. And to take Dramamine if I'm super dizzy. I told her about the nurse suggesting ears and she was like yup could be the problem but their is no point in checking. I left so annoyed she didn't bother actually looking at my ears.

I was really hoping it would be something so simple like my ears that could be resolved.  But instead I left frustrated and annoyed.

  • If you are concerned about your ears, you could see your PCP or go to an urgent care. They can tell if there is fluid in them. I have had cold symptoms for 4 weeks (cough, congestion) and I went to urgent care, who said I do have fluid. Fluid can be caused by pregnancy...and there isn't much they can do...unless you have an ear infection.

  • I assume it's because you probably didn't have any ear pain or ear symptoms and since she was likely not going to order antibiotics  for dizziness that "could" be an ear problem she didn't see the point in looking in ears.

I prefer it when docs explain the pathophysiology and reasons behind their decisions to me. Most do, but some I have to question.

Doctors, for the most part, are not pains in the butt, they are just people. In the ER we work closely with all the docs and you get to know them. The ones that are pains in the butt, are pains not because they are doctors but because that is their personality.

  • So I was having really bad allergies and dizziness last fall.  My OB sent me to my primary care dr because it's really not the OB's specialty.  The told me to take OTC zyrtec and wrote me a prescription for Rhinocort (cat b nasal spray).  Cleared it right up.  You could also try those sea bands for your wrists.  I'd try you family dr.

I thought about this as a reason they didn't look too. OB's are not ear experts, if it doesn't look like a vajajay they probably don't have nearly as much experience except a long time ago when they had to do a rotation in residency/med school in family medicine.

  • Thanks for all the advice!

i called and spoke with an OB nurse of my Drs before coming in and she said to come in and we will check your BP and look at your ears. And yes they probably aren't experts on ears the nurse said they would check. So it just annoyed me the OB didn't actually take the two seconds to look even if it wouldn't have done any good.

I'm planning on counting my protein and if it doesn't get better there is always my next appointment.
