Babies: 6 - 9 Months

how to transition to daycare?

LO is on a nice little schedule at home, but we are starting daycare in a week or two.  I'm really nervous about it.  When we visit my mom for the weekend, he doesn't sleep or take naps, he just fights it and cries.  I'm worried he'll do the same thing at day care....

do we just have to stick it out until he gets used to sleeping in a different environment, or does anyone have any tips on how to make an easier transition?

  • The first week or so is rough, but babies work it out themselves. Ds has a completely different schedule at daycare then he does at home, but it works for us.

  • Yes, expect a different schedule.  She seems to sleep less at dc.

  • Our daycare gives us the option to send a soothing item for our LO at nap time. Maybe this is something you could do to make naps easier?

Our schedule is different than DC and I agree with the previous poster that LO seems to sleep less while there (they always write down what he eats and sleeps). But it doesn't seem to interfere with our at home schedule.

  • Be prepared for change.  I mean that kindly but in all likelihood, your child's sleeping schedule may suffer a bit.  We had my daughter in a great nap/sleep schedule prior to me going back to work.  We knew when she would nap and she went down in her crib easily for her naps and slept great.

She just doesn't sleep that well in daycare.  Its noisier and more distracting.  She catnaps during hte car ride to work/daycare. I feel like all of our hard work establishing a great sleep/nap schedule went out the window.

I have noticed that the older babies in the daycare seem to be able to nap fairly well.  I think it takes quite some time for a child to adjust to napping in a daycare setting with the noise and distractions.

    Good luck.
