I'm so upset. DD will probably be getting an endoscopy and/or colonoscopy sched. today. She's been having issues with blood in her diaper for 4 months now & they keep saying allergies. It's sporadic & she's growing & happy & healthy in every other way. Not in pain either. So now that I've cut out all possible allergins this is the next step.
I know things could be much worse but it still scares me that she will have to have one or both of these.
Just very upset & looking for anyone who might have had these done with DC.
Re: Endoscopy & colonoscopy
no advice just wanted to offer some hugs.
No advice but wanted to let you know that you're not alone! JD has had blood in his stool for 3.5 months now. We've had multiple stool cultures to rule out infection, I've cut dairy and soy and he's been on Neocate for the past 2 weeks.
Like you the blood is sporadic but it always comes back. For a long time JD was having belly pains and would scream his head off when he needed to poop. That has gotten better (thank GOD) and he now just fusses and needs "help" pooping (I have to help him "stand and squat" until he finally poops).
As I type I'm waiting by the phone for the gastroenterologist to call and let me know when we have to take him in for a scope.
HUGS to you... I know exactly how stressful it is and I hope everything works out OK for you!
I had multiple upper endoscopies as a baby/child. Back then (1976), they didn't use any sedation for it. I was born with a severe malformation of my esophagus/stomach/intestines and needed surgery when I was 5.
Now, I have to have colonoscopies every 2yrs and upper endoscopies every 5yrs.
The worst part about the colonoscopy is the prep. I'm not sure what they do for babies because, honestly, I can't imagine trying to get a baby to drink this stuff. It's gruesome, horrible stuff. Being on a diet of clear broth - not sure if BM or formula is OK or if just clear Pedialyte is given.
The test itself isn't bad because you're knocked out for it. I was a little sore after, but, really, couldn't tell anything was done it me. I'm sure having your baby sedated will be scary, but the test is pretty fast and it's usually just a twilight sedation with no intubation.
The upper one gave me a sore throat, but that was it. Again, knocked out (unlike the ones I had as a baby!). No prep for that, so it's easier all around.
I'd say each one lasts about 15mns total for the entire procedure unless they find something and fix it right there. It's really the prep work and the sedation that's the scary part.
The tests are generally pain-free with no lasting pain or effects after them.
Good luck! I hope it's nothing serious.
