Breastfeeding

Breast pumping quantity question

Hi,

I'm new to breast pumping and my lo is only 9days old, I try to pump twice a day 15mins at a time, and I know that right now the quantity won't be that high, but, the 2nd pump is always much less.  At 11am I pumped 3oz total and then at 3pm I pumped less than an oz total.  Is this normal, will it improve will as I pump more?

ETA - I should mention that we are having a latching problem, so I pump instead.

Re: Breast pumping quantity question

  • Your milk production is highest during the morning, so it is normal to pump more in the morning than you would in the afternoon.  The amount you pump may increase as you pump more.

Are you pumping immediate after breast feedings? Or are you exclusively pumping? If you are pumping after breastfeeding, than less than an ounce can be normal, particularly in the evening.  I often only get 1/2 to an ounce if I pump after breastfeeding. But if you are exclusively pumping and that's all you're getting, you may want to see a lactation consultant to see about increasing your supply.

  • If you are EP you really should pump more than twice a day.  You should be pumping each time LO is eating, typically every 2-3 hours at that age.  If you are BF then the best thing for your supply is to nurse, nurse, nurse.  Have you tried a nipple shield or met with a lactation consultant about the latch issue?  The more you nurse (or pump), that will tell your body to increase milk production.  I wouldn't go longer than 3 hours (around the clock) at this point to either try to nurse or to pump.  After about a month  you could probably increase to 4 hours at night.

This. It is very, very important for you to be nursing and/or pumping around the clock at this point. It is so early and your body is very responsive to the frequency and duration of nursing/pumping sessions in order to establish your milk supply. Pumping only 2x/day (assuming you're not nursing at all) will result in your supply decreasing and, most likely, drying up.
