Convertable Carseat Questions

Both LO and I hated her Graco Snugride so she has been in a Britax Boulevard in my vehicle ('98 Lincoln Navigator) since 3 months.  We want to get a convertable for my H's car ('00 Honda CRV) but I am not sure what to go with.  I LOVE the Boulevard for ease of use and installation.  LO is also very happy in there and I would have no problem getting a second one but I have been reading a lot about the Radian, Tru Fit, etc and am not sure what to go with.

My LO is tiny.  Only 15.7lbs at 8 months and has always been off the charts or in the very, very low percentile for height.  She rides in the middle now, but we would like to have more kids.  Probably while she is still rear facing.  The Boulevard does not need to stay in my car if there is a seat that is good but will not fit in the CRV.  Also, is there a better, or safer, seat for one of the outboard positions if/when #2 comes along and we need to move our current LO?  A lot on carseat.org said they do not like the Radian outboard.  Would she be able to ride in the Radian now with the angle adjuster even though she is not 12 months.  I do like the idea of headwings since it makes me feel like she is safer.  Any suggestions?

  • Since she's tiny, I'd consider the TrueFit. DD2 is still comfortably rfing in hers at 2.5 years, 32 lbs, and approx 3738". DD2 will actually outgrow the rfing limits by weight first since the TrueFit has a tall shell but low rfing weight limit. We got ours on kids.woot.com for just over 100, and I still see it listed there occasionally.

    We also have a SK Radian with the angle adjuster. It fits better behind the passenger seat of our SUV than it does in the middle. I'm pretty sure the angle adjuster can be used as soon as baby can sit on their own. The shell height of the seat is a little less than the TrueFit, but the rfing weight limit is higher.

    I think they're both good seats, and we've been happy with both. The Radian will last longer ffing just because the top harness slot is higher.

    The other seat I'm waiting to buy is the Graco Size4Me/Graco My Size 70. It has the tallest shell height on the market besides the 500 Foonf and a 40 lb rfing weight limit. My DDs are 90th or above for height, and DD1 would have been able to rf to 4 years in this seat. DD2 should come close since she's a little heavier. I'm just waiting for the BRU trade in event to buy it.

    This.  You like the Boulevard already so why not just get another?

  • Since your child is a peanut you definitely have a lot more freedom in choosing a carseat (I can't get britaxes because my kids outgrow them really early; both outgrew marathons RF by about 18 months and FF before 3). If you're happy with the britax that's certainly one option. You could also look at the graco myride 65 if you are interested in a lower priced option for the secondary car (there's no safety difference).

    I've not heard not to install radians on the side seats. In fact, I bought radians because they were the only taller seats to accommodate my tall children that fit in my beetle because they're low profile.  The beetle is a 4 seat car with no center seat (no seatbelt and the owner's manual prohibits sharing the outboard latches to get a center install) and the radian installs beautifully in that car.

    The true fit is also a great seat to look into.

    Usually I suggest looking at seats with the tallest shells as most kids outgrow seats by height younger than parents expect, but since your child is teeny you will be fine with whatever seat you love!
