Went to my family doctor today and while I was there asked if she could get my GD results, as I'm not seeing my OB for another few weeks. Results came back positive ![]()
I had been told at my first OB appointment that I was at a higher risk for GD due to having PCOS, but I'm a FTM, so this is all new to me. I have googled and read all sorts of worrying information about GD - mainly having a much larger baby, preterm labour, and baby could have too much sugar which causes heart defects and larger upper bodies. Is it as bad as google makes out? I'm going to call my OB's office tomorrow and ask for some information also.
Re: Positive for Gestational Diabetes :(
Did you fail the 1 hr or the 3 hour? I'm heading off to my 1-hour shortly...
I'm so sorry that you didn't pass. That sucks. I think that since they caught it, and can treat you, it will probably be fine, but I guess I would just talk to your doctor. Dr. Google makes everything sound way too horrible.
I'm sorry you failed the test. I had GD with my DD and it really wasn't a big deal. Most likely your doctor will have you meet with a nutritionist and you'll learn about monitoring your sugars and eating/exercise plans. Granted, my case of GD was very easily diet controlled, but the GD diet isn't too crazy, lots of protein, no excess sugars and carbs.
The key to GD and avoiding the complications you listed is making sure you are actively working to control your diabetes. Eating right, monitoring your sugars, exercising, being truthful with your doctor and yourself, and self control. The positive thing about being diagnosed early is that you have a better chance of putting a plan in place and taking control of it early on.
Good luck!
GD isa big deal *if you don't take care of it*... it'll be a pain in the butt for a few month, with extra monitoring, more careful nutrition choices, and more exercising... but in the end you and the baby will be healthier for it!
you'll be okay, hang in there!
Over-40 parents...what we lack in vigor, we make up for with cunning.
Thank you everyone for your responses, they really made me feel a lot better
I failed the 3 hour test, they seem to send everyone for the 3 hour test straight away here, rather than doing the 1 hour.
I'll call my doctor today and arrange an appointment with the dietician and diabetes educator, and hopefully everything will be fine. I'm concerned about the exercise needed to look after this, as I've been seeing a physio since about week 12 due to back/pelvic issues relating to the pregnancy, so I'm hoping a little exercise each day will be enough.
