  use laid back breastfeeding with baby basically on you, or football hold with baby sitting up a bit so their head is higher than your boob.

  latch on and when let down happens, purposefully unlatch baby and let extra hard spray of milk go into a towel or cup then relatch.

  also work hard to keep baby on one side per feeding being sure they finish that side to get more hindmilk, and offer the 2nd side only as dessert.  you may find that in order to lower your supply to meet baby's needs without drowning him, that you need to feed on only one side and then offer the other side on the next feeding without pumping in between.  with overactive let down and high supply, you may just have too much milk, so you need to lower supply a bit by block feeding like that or for longer periods of time.

   

  This. Also, is he getting to the point where he's crying for food once he gets to your breast? When it gets to that point with DD, usually when she wakes up hungry at night because I can't see her cues before that, she's so stressed out she can't focus to find the nipple. Then, since she can't find it, she gets even more upset. Once she does find it, she does these weird little almost kisses to get the milk going, attaching and reattaching  lightly five or six times before finally latching. Once she latches, I recline a little bit and put her kind of on top of my boob so the milk has to fight gravity. Sometimes she gets going a little too fast and gags or coughs, but usually this works out.

  Do you burp him at all during feedings?  We have the same issue with rooting around like crazy, bobbing on and off the breast, etc., and I've discovered that she usually needs to be burped when she starts doing that.  Sometimes gas drops or gripe water also help her calm down which helps her latch better.

  When my DD roots around fast like that and won't latch or stay latched it is either because she has to burp, is gassy or is trying to have a BM. I used to get so frustrated when she did that until my LC pointed out that's why she was doing it. Now I realize what is bothering her and help her get more comfortable before trying to latch again.

  This! When Nola would be on and off like that I would hear a BM shortly after! If it's at first latch though I would try the laid back nursing or using a cup or towel to let the hard spray of let down pour out like PP said! Pretty soon your LO will be able to take let down like a champ!

  I had the same issue with DD.  I switched to feeding her only on one side with each feeding, which helped with the overactive letdown.  Her spitting up lessened (previously I had been nervous that she was spitting up everything she ate!), and she began latching without the freakout session.
