Bib Questions

Just wondering what you all are doing with bibs right now... For eating, are you using the ones with the catching pocket thingy, or still using plain fabric ones? Also, I've been noticing that A's bibs are starting to have that musty smell, from sitting wet for too long. When he first started eating solids, we'd throw them in his laundry with food on them, then I noticed his room was starting to smell from it, so we started rinsing out the bibs, and then, since they were wet, using them to clean his face. I do let them dry on the side of his hamper, but we're still getting that musty smell, and it's not coming out totally after being washed. Any tips for getting it out? And if you don't use wet bibs for face/hand cleaning what do you use? DH is wary of using wipes on his face (I don't really understand why) and wet paper towels seem so scratchy!

Re: Bib Questions

  • I use wet paper towels on his face and he doesn't seem to mind. Boogie Wipes also work well.

We also use plastic bibs with the pocket although I don't think the pocket really ever catches anything. I like the plastic better because it keeps his clothes dryer when he makes a mess with the sippy.

  • I always use plastic ones with pockets for feedings and I just use plain wipes for his face. Much cheaper. I even use them to take my make-up off.

  • We had the same issue with the musty smell so we honestly just threw them away. Wiping the face, we use either a wash cloth, paper towel, boogie wipes, or handmade wipes, whatever is at hand. For drooling issues, we still use a cloth bib and it just gets tossed in the washer at night. For meals, we use the silicone bib. We tried the plastic like bibs with the pocket but the pocket never caught anything. With the silicone bib, the pocket sticks out a little further and it actually catches the food. When he's done eating, we wash out the bib and hang it on the drying rack to dry. It gets washed in the washer once or twice a week. We never put it in the dryer

  • We use fabric bibs. We were using the plastic ones but then she started pulling on the to the point of choking herself so we went back to the fabric ones. I wipe her face with a damp paper towel after we eat. The bibs usually hang out on the kitchen until I get around to throwing them in the laundry room to be washed.

We have a Baby Bjorn bib (https://www.babybjorn.com/us/products/kitchen/soft-bib/soft-bib/) that we use most of the time.  It catches almost everything and B will even fish out food from there when she's finished with the food on her tray.

The only thing that has worked for musty smells for me in the past is bleach...then it smells like bleach, but I'll put it through the wash an extra time or two and solve that problem.

We got this same basic bib at Ikea in a pack with a suction bowl, spoon, and a sippy for $2.99. Amazing.

  • I had some plastic ones from Target that I liked at first, but then I just couldn't get them clean and they had that musty smell (you couldn't machine wash them).  I looked on amazon and got these https://www.amazon.com/Bumkins-3-Pack-Waterproof-SuperBib/dp/B000XPWXK2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1356807660&sr=8-1&keywords=bumkins and I absolutely love them.  They are super cute, soft and machine washable.

I use wet paper towels to clean her face.  She hates getting her face or nose wiped no matter what I use!

  • I love the tommee tippee ones.  I guess they are silicone or rubber.  They are great because we just wipe them off after and they are good to go.  We use fabric ones when she is dressed nice and is taking her bottle.  She tends to take in a mouthful, get distracted and lets it pour out.

  • We only use bibs if we're out. If we're at home, I either wipe off Aria's shirt with a baby wipe when we're done or just take her shirt off while she's eating. Most of the time I just wipe her off, because she's not a very messy eater. [unless you give her messy food, of course]

To help with the musty smell, toss some vinegar in when you wash it. I use about a half cup for a big load of laundry. Works great! I also use it with towels. :0]

That's nice!  Do you think that it will hold up well?  The Baby Bjorn one seems like it will hold up for years, which is nice because it's a little more money.

I honestly have no idea how it will hold up over time. But for the price of the other one (not that it's completely outrageous, but it is more), I can get 4 of these entire sets including the bib, so it's worth the risk to me even if I eventually have to replace it. Plus, it's cute little frog. Smile

  • We don't use bibs.

And I ditto Lancy, pour a little vinegar in with the clothes to get the musty smell out.
