Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Sleep issues...HELP!!!

My son is going to be 7 months on 1/8. He hasn't slept through the night once. Lately, last 3 weeks, he goes to bed fine without a problem, but wakes up every 2.5 hours. Some days he's waking up every hour. I don't know what to do. I have tried EVERYTHING. Did anyone else go through this? Any advice?

Thanks!

  • I don't have advice about sleep training but does he have a good bed time routine that stays relatively the same each night?  Is his belly full when you lay him down?  Sorry if those questions are something you are already doing but sometimes it's the simple things that can help a baby sleep better.

  • Perfectly normal.

  • It is completely normal for your seven month old to be waking up every 2.5 hours. In fact sleep researchers have actually found that waking during the night is vital for development of the baby's brain as well as helping the baby thrive physically. All babies are unique. Some infants don't sleep through the night until they are over two years old! If you find you are just way too tired then I suggest you make some lifestyle changes for yourself. Try to find ways to relax during the day: naps, meditation, bubble baths, reading a good book. Also, as soon as you put your LO down at night make sure you go to bed as well!

  • Hi there,

I went through the same thing with my son. He is almost 10 months old and he started sleeping through the night at 8.5 months; I feel your pain.

As much as I hated the idea of "crying it out", I was totally exhausted and useless at work. One night after I fell asleep my husband turned the sound off on the baby monitor and I woke up at 4AM panicking that something was wrong with my son. Apparently he woke up twice, cried for 10min and fell asleep (I was so tired that I didn't even hear him). That lasted 3 nights and now he sleeps 8PM-5AM, that's when I bring him in for some cuddle time and he usually falls asleep till 7AM.

As long as your baby is not hungry or in pain he'll be ok. Good luck!!! Smile

You'll see how fabulous yopu feel after sleeping for more than 2 hours at a time.

  • Yes he goes to sleep full and at the same time every night. We have a good routine even with naps that he follows every day.
  • I don't feed him every time he wakes up. I let him fuss a little yes. Sometimes he puts himself to sleep other times he just screams and when I go in and pick him up he puts his head on my shoulder and goes back to sleep. There have been times that at 3AM he wakes up and is wide awake wanting to play. He takes 2 long naps during the day and a cat nap, half hour or so, around 5:00. Some days he only sleeps for 30-45 minutes 3-4 times a day, but for the most part he's a great napper. I know that there are times he is overtired and I know that doesn't help him at night.
  • I don't need to respond everytime cause he puts himself back to sleep sometimes.
  • Thanks for the advice.I know it will eventually get better I was just trying to see if others had any suggestions of anything else I could try because I honestly feel like i have exhausted all my options. I feel bad letting him cry too much, but know that I need to. Weird part is that as soon as I go in and pick him up, usually, he puts his head on my shoulder and goes back to sleep. Very rarely when he is fussing are his eyes open. He sometimes wakes up at 3AM and wants to play and is wide awake at that point. If he falls back to sleep on my shoulder and I go to put him down he gets really fussy again.

I did the saaame thing hun. You may not realize it but you're letting him nap too often, too long & too late. Keep him up more during the day, I had to do this with dd. and as much as it pained me, let her cio at first (5-10mins max). I had to come up with an evening schedule, 7:30pm works best in our house. 2 naps max during the day, 1 morning nap & 1 afternoon nap - no later than 4pm & up no later than 4pm.

I wake up, do breakfast - playtime then a nap around 10ish. She's up about an hour later & same routine, usually down by 2:30pm then up around 3:30pm latest. Playtime, dinner, bath, bottle & lights our for her by 7:30 sometimes 8pm. My pediatrician said do not let her nap for more than 2.5 hours daily. As soon as i took & stuck to her advice. Night time has gotten much better than before.

Everyone's house is different but this is what works best for us. Just wanted to share. GL!

Also, dd is being fed formula... making sure lo has a full belly by bedtime is essential, otherwise lo will wake up hungry. this is something you will want to talk to your pediatrician about depending as to whether you're bf or ff & will be able to give you advice fit for your routine to help come up with suggestions.

b/c i ff & now she's eating solids I put rice cereal in her bottle at night. Burp & make sure to give gas drops just incase.

  • Thanks so much for the advice. His longest nap is 1.5 hours. Normally he naps around 9:30-10 and again between 2:00-2:30.  The 4:305 nap is only from daycare home which is 5 minutes from home. Hopefully he grows out of it. Good luck to you
