Swelling...

Is anyone only swelling in one foot/ankle/leg?

My left will swell but will go down at night or in a recliner for a few hours.  My right is so bad that it never goes down to the point of numbness... I've just never heard of pregnant women struggling with just one side.

Anyone using compression socks?  If so, I'd appreciate a rec!

Re: Swelling...

  • My right foot swells worth than my left, frequently. My left foot will go down, but my right rarely does, even after a night's sleep. I thought maybe it was because I have damaged that foot more often (sprains and breaks) and is more prone to swelling anyway.

I didn't mess with compression socks. My dr. said my swelling wasn't bad enough to mess with them. He didn't even have me get them when I flew over Thanksgiving break. I do know that they sell some at Walgreens though.

  • My right swells worse than my left. My calves are huge.

  • My left swells more than my right and like PP said I assume it has to do with an old injury. My doctor recommended compression socks but I've never honestly thought my swelling was bad enough to warrant them plus when I have worn socks that are a little tight all I just have swelling above the sock line so it kind of seems like whats the point.
  • My left leg swells more than my right bc I favor one side over the other due to an old injury. My doctor worried at first about a blood clot but decided it was normal for me.

  • I just asked my doctor about that today. My right ankle is swelling worse than my left and won't go back to normal. She said as long as it is not accompanied by pain or is not warmer than usual to the touch it is nothing to worry about. She said it could just be the way the baby is positioned that causes one to swell over the other.

  • I'd check with your doctor just in case because they worry about blood clots if there is swelling on one side.

  • My left ankle and foot are much worse than my right. Same thing last pregnancy. A MW told me it has to do with where the baby is laying.
  • This happened to me last week, and I read to call the doctor if it happens (because can indicate clot in a leg).  They were SO NOT concerned about this, they said if I had a blood clot I would have lots more symptoms (numbness and cold, discolored legs).  I drank a lot of water and kept my legs elevated as much as I could, and my legs were back to normal after a few days.

I haven't had to resort to compression socks this pregnancy, so I can't offer any advice there.

  • My right has severe pitting edema that does not go down at night anymore. The left usually goes down at night. Because of this, I have been having labs done weekly to be sure my liver is functioning up to par. So far my BP is fine and I am not spilling any protein. My OB believes it is due to the wait gain.

  • I had mild swelling in both so I did use compression stockings.  Found the preggers brand online and they were so great, I used them even after baby.  Justified the cost a little more even though they were one of the cheapest maternity compression I could find :)
