Cloth Diapering

swim diaper on a cruise?

We've only ever used cloth swim diapers, without any issues...we are taking a Disney Cruise in a few months. I know that b/c she is in diapers, LO is limited only one "pool" area and can't go in the regular pools.

Wondering if I should buy a pack of disposable swim diapers? I always thought they were gross b/c they let pee out and are only meant to contain poop. Our swim diapers hold everything in and are great. BUT, I'm not sure how well it would work to wash them in the sink in our cabin and they take a long time to dry...I have two though so maybe we could make it work if she only got to go once a day...

Anyone have experience with this?

Re: swim diaper on a cruise?

  • I would make sure that swim diapers are allowed first of all. It might be that the cruise line requires the disposable kind. (However I doubt anyone would say anything either way On our cruise "rules" were broken all the time in front of the staff and no one seemed to really care unless it was something major).

When it comes to washing them in the sink, I wouldn't "wash" them unless you have a poop mess. I'd just rinse them each night. Most the cabin bathrooms have the hand held shower heads, so you could probably wash it over the toilet with that shower head better than in the sink. I found on our cruise that the sink water was hard to get hot, and the sink was pretty shallow. but the shower was VERY hot and had great water pressure.

I would definitely take two though! And I'd take some clothes pins so you can actually hang them on the clothes line in the bathroom. (The clothes pins are awesome on the bottom of the shower curtain to, it keeps it from blowing in on you while you're trying to take a shower.)

  • The web site just says: Young children who are not toilet trained are welcome to enjoy the fountain play area near Mickey's Pool, designed exclusively for the enjoyment of children wearing swim diapers.

They're not allowed in any of the other pools...I imagine if she is wearing a swim diaper she'll be fine, regardless of whether it is cloth or disposable. She is a pretty predictable pooper, so I'm hopeful that we can avoid poops in the swim diaper...and probably if I rinse the pee out in the shower or sink it should be ok. Or maybe I'll just bring a cover with me and get some disposable swim diapers...it's more that I don't particularly want to get peed on before/after she plays in the water with the swim diaper on. It's like a splash zone/sprinkler park...

  • My BFF just went on a Disney cruise, and swim diapers weren't allowed at all. I'd double check that first. But even my cloth swim diapers don't hold pee. They're not really designed to. If you can use them on the cruise, I'd just do whatever is easiest.

They're not allowed in the pools but are required for the splash park area.

I am pretty sure our swim diapers hold everything in...I've never gotten peed on when she was wearing them, but it could have just been coincidence.

    Thanks for the advice ladies!

  • Swim diapers of any kind aren't meant to be absorbent for pee, they would just fill up as soon as they were submerged :)

If it were me, I would just bring the disposable kind, even though I have a swim diaper. I just wouldn't want to deal with the hassle of having to rinse it out. I'd rather be having fun on the cruise!

your swim diaper might catch pee with a small absorbant layer, but as soon as the pool water swishes through, the pee comes out with it, just like when you're washing it in the sink.
