Can I just vent for a minute?
Every year my dad's side of the family gets together at my grandmother's for a Christmas dinner. Every year it's gross. Dry turkey, way too sweet ham, a bunch of crappy side dishes etc. My grandma ends up cleaning up for hours after. Her home is nice but small so everybody is stuffed in there...Not ideal. She wanted to do an open house this year (on Sunday 12/23) so people could come and go as they pleased and wanted to do something different for dinner. I suggested a taco bar. I put together a menu, planned to go to her house early to help get everything ready, (she lives about an hour away.) We decided nobody else should bring anything since it was an open house and counting on people for menu items doesn't make sense. I was going to pick up some of it and she was going to get the rest.
Apparently my aunt insists on bringing a turkey and my uncle (not her H) was all upset there wasn't going to be turkey and ham so my grandma said she'd make a ham for him and sweet potatoes which he also wants. I had already asked his wife her thoughts and she said a taco bar was awesome. So my grandma said she'd do both. Um, no. The whole point was to do something more inexpensive with easy clean up. I told DH all of this at lunch and he said just tell her to scrap the Taco bar and we'd take her out to dinner sometime. We're no longer going. I know she's disappointed but I'm not going to deal with their crappy attitudes and have my grandma make two separate totally unrelated meals to please a bunch of whiny adults.
I am still making some sopapilla cheesecake pie bites because I want them. Anyone want to come over later for some?
Re: Dumb Christmas Dinner Junk (longish vent)
My SO's grandma had eight kids and loved cooking for everyone and their families. But she is 90 now we all feel bad about her spending forever in the kitchen. So we told her our favorite meal is spaghetti with Ragu sauce. Easy peasy and she gets the enjoyment she feels when she is cooking for everyone.
Exactly! She spends hours in the kitchen and cleaning and doesn't get to enjoy it. Meanwhile they always find something to gripe and complain about the whole time. She loves steak and DH said we could take her out to this steak house place so I'm looking forward to that.
Missy I will save you some sopailllas
