I breastfeed my almost 4 month old. We've given him a bottle at least once a week since about 5 weeks old. He's never really liked any that we have. I've tried different brands, but am still at a loss. He sucks at first and then cries and refuses to eat. I have been looking for a part time job, so I have been trying to give him a bottle a day for the last couple weeks and he usually only gets an ounce down after 15 minutes of frustration.
The bottles I've tried:
Tommee Tippie (1 & 2 sized nipples)
Think Baby (1 &2 nipples)
Avent
Similac
I saw that Medela had one of those nipples that uses a vacuum technology to be more like the breast. One nipple is $20 so I haven't tried it yet.
Any advice?
Re: Baby won't take bottle.
i can't speak from experience but i have read that some babies will take a bottle from someone other than mom and/or if mom leaves for a little while. if this is possible, i would definitely try this first...
does he take a paci? maybe look for a nipple with a similar shape?
i've also heard of some babies skipping bottles all together and going straight to sippy cups. I haven't researched this but apparently they make sippy cups that accommodate newborn on up.
good luck!!
I had the exact same problem. Even when I left the house for several hours she still wouldn't take a bottle from my husband, my mom, or anyone else. It was horrible! I tried lots of different bottles, and then found the mimijumi bottle. It was pretty expensive, but she took down an entire bottle the very first time we tried it! I bought a second bottle and rotated between the two until she got used to bottles. Within two weeks she was taking any kind of bottle (just in time for my return to work). I agree with the others that it helps if you aren't around. My daughter would hold out for my breast if she knew I was near.
Good luck, I know it is frustrating!
Yeah, I've left the house and had my DH, sister and grandma try with the bottles and it doesn't seem to help. mimijumi... never heard of that one.
I'll look it up.
Otherwise, how soon before they can do the sippy cup? I've heard that trick as well, but figured it wouuld be a few months before we could try that.
I had trouble finding the same latex nipples this time so I tried using some silicone nipples we never used with my son and she hated it. I finally ordered some latex nipples on Amazon and she takes those much better. She's still not great at it because she doesn't take a bottle often, my son was in daycare at this age do he had to take bottles daily.
