Ultrasound

Hi ladies,

I just had my first appt with my family doc and she said my first ultrasound wouldnt be til i am 18 weeks.
My friend just had one at 8 weeks and then she's also going for her 18 week one. My doctor said that as long as you're having a normal pregnancy, there is no need for one before the 18 week mark. But my friend told me that your first ultrasound should be earlier than 18 weeks because they check for heartbeat and measure the baby.
Just wondering if any of you had similar/different experience?

Re: Ultrasound

  • I had my first apt on Tuesday (I was 6w2d) and my OB did a vaginal U/S and we saw the heartbeat. She also confirmed how far along I am compared with my last period. She did this with my first pregnancy as well. I had an U/S at 18 weeks to check the sex, measurments and so on... There is another OB in town who has an ultrasound tech in her office and she givesan  U/S on each visit!

  • With my first two babies, they didn't ultrasound until 1820 weeks. I think what your doctor is doing is fairly normal.

Is your friend a physician? No? Then trust your physician!

Unless you want the NT scan at 11-12 weeks, there is no indication for an ultrasound before 18-20 weeks (unless you have a previous loss or underwent IF treatments). Some insurance companies will only cover one ultrasound for the whole pregnancy.

  • A ton of doctors only do one ultrasound. The can check the heartbeat with a doppler. There is nothing to worry about.
