No. I've done this. Got a PBK gift card and used it on a frame for a picture (for me). Also, I've used a PBK gift card from a friend to purchase gifts for DS that I've put under the tree "from Mom and Dad". ha!
edit: I did this when DS was a baby. Now he's old enough to know better.
When people give me money to go to my kids I make sure that's where it goes. Whether it be in savings, 529, toys, what-have you.
I mean, if you needed food for the family that you otherwise couldn't afford, then sure, take the $50, but this is icky to me
This is kind of where I'm at.
I mean if you were going to buy yourself the clothes regardless then whatever. But if you wouldn't have bought it and were then like "hey now I can buy myself something" then yeah I judge a little.
I don't get the people who are upset about this.nbsp; Am I missing something?nbsp; Like, say she bought a 50 art easel for LO.nbsp; If she takes the easel back to the store, returns it, and buys the same easel with grandma's 50.nbsp; Would that be acceptable?nbsp;
Lol! I usually agree with you to the letter, CoffeeBeen, but I gotta dissent here. I don't think parents are supposed to pocket their kids Christmas money as payback for all the presents they already bought.
It's not like OP is a horrible person or anything! However, the gift was meant for her kid, not for her.
I know, I feel like a turncoat or something.  Prepare to internet battle, missymo.
Since she said she overspent, I'm assuming the kid has multiple presents.  It's not like Grandma is suddenly footing the bill for Christmas.  Just one present.  Seems like a reasonable distribution of parents vs. grandparent gifts.
And so long as they say, "Hey Grandma, thanks so much for the easel!  LO plays with it every day!" and LO knows that the gift is from Grandma, then that gift is from Grandma.
How is it so different from if Grandma had given the $50 before all of the Christmas gifts were bought?
Well, it's different because Grandma DIDN'T give the money before the gifts were bought. :
I will not disagree with CoffeeBeen! I must leave this thread.
And here I thought more people would have judged me on the target jeans
lolololol.
I'd wager at least 90% of the people on this board shop at Target.
Unable to even.

Yes. I don't think you needed to go out and buy the kid another gift, but the $ was meant for him. I think you should have put it in his savings account.
It wasn't even 50 items from the Target dollar aisle.

Honestly, a little bit, yeah. I would have put it in my daughter's piggy bank or college fund if she had enough toys.
I would kinda be pissed if I found out my sister took 50 I sent my nephew and spent it on clothes for herself.
I don't judge too much over it, but it's not at all what I would do.
Meh. If I gave a toddler cash, I wouldn't expect the parents to spend that exact $50 on the kid. If I really wanted it to be used towards the kid, I would have asked what the kid needs/wants or sent a gift card to a children's type store. IMO, a cash gift is really more for the parents to offset other expenses for the child until the kid is old enough to understand Grandma sent $50 to go shopping with.
If I sent the kid $50 and s/he got nothing for Christmas, then I would be pissed if it was spent on jeans for the mom.
I don't judge because I see both sides but I probably lean more towards the side that says it was money intended for your LO and since you'd already spent money on gifts he was receiving anyway, the $50 should have gone to him.
But it's all good 'cause it'll come back to you when he's in college and needs spending money. You'll just have to dole out an extra $50 to make up for what's not in his bank account.
Not in the slightest. I wish my family would give me that option so that every year we don't have to find places in our small apartment for how much crap they buy.
Only a little. I probably would have stuck it in his college account or something. But really, as long as you stick her name on one of the gifts and tell her that he really loved the ____ she got him, it's fine.
DH and I have plenty of money. So taking their money and spending it on us when it was intended for LOs is (IMO) 100% wrong (for us).
If a person give $$$ intended for LOs, it goes to LOs.
I have a dear family friend who gave my DS1 $100 with a note (mind you, DS1 was 9 months old at the time and my dear, dear family friend was in her 90s) that said "work hard at your life, but remember to have fun too".
I put the $100 in his bank account. I put the note in my diary.
If I ever had a daughter, I'd have named her Marion.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
Re: Do you judge me?
Target jeans ruined Christmas.
Target ruins everything.

I will be taking $50 worth of toys & putting it from her, don't worry those who judge me.

Yes.
