Question for those that have been pregnant before...

Hi,

So I know the popular conversation can easily be weight when it comes to pregnancy.  This is my first time around, and I am really struggling with it.  I am short (4'11"), and so nervous that my width will exceed my height before my nine months are up!  Anyways, I am very healthy and active, and have been eating as healthy as possible since I found out, continuing to exercise, etc.  As of today, I am up 11ish pounds.  They seem to sneak up on me!  I am starting to stick out, but also just look "big" in general.

For those who are second time (or more) pregnant, did you notice that your weight gain followed the recommendation of just a few pounds first tri, and then a pound or a so a week thereafter? Was it steady, or did the amount you gain slow down/speed up at different points?

I am nervous that if I continue at this rate, I will be miserable! Of course, it's all but a healthy baby, and I do not want to obsess over this, but I know I am.  I'm trying to think positive, but those websites that have the weight recommendations leave me so discouraged.

Thank you!

Re: Question for those that have been pregnant before...

  • I gained a bunch in the first tri, nothing in the second tri and the rest in the third tri last time.  This time I've only gained 4 lbs and I'm 15 weeks... I have no idea what the difference is, in fact, I was working out more last pregnancy.

Don't worry about weight gain.  The healthy range is 25-35 lbs, but I know a lot of women who went over despite eating healthy and exercising.  They all lost it when they got serious about losing it (it took some 6 months, took others 2 yrs).  So even if you gain more than you'd like, you can and will lose it!

Good luck.  Just keep taking good care of yourself and your baby and it will be fine!

  • Both times before I gained most of my weight in first tri. This time between m/s and the flu I lost weight. I gained 2530lbs overall both times before.
But PP is right everyone is different. If your Dr is not worried I would try not to either.

  • Everyone is different.  I think the OBs dont' like to see huge jumps in weight gain over short periods of time (because that could be an indicator of GD, water retention issues, etc).

My experience:  1st pregnancy I lost a couple lbs the first trimester, and then it was steady gaining up until I gave birth at 36 weeks.  I had gained a total of ~30 lbs at that point.  Who knows what I would have gained if I had gone full-term.

This time around I am up 5 lbs after the first trimester, but my thyroid levels are off and they just upped my medication so that could have been why I gained more this time.  But I'm not too worried about it.  I'll gain what I'm going to gain.

  • I'm the same height, fellow shorty :)  I gained I think about 35 pounds with my son but IIRC it was pretty in line with the guidelines per trimester.  I think I gained a few pounds in first tri and then more steadily after that.  Like others have said, everyone is going to be different but I will say that as a tiny person, you want to be as aware of your weight gain as you can be.  You may gain more than you want but if you know you're eating healthy, that's what your body is meant to do.  What you don't want to do is be careless because I say from experience that 9 months pregnant on a 4'11 body is hard.

  • With my first I gained 8 lbs pretty quickly, but stayed there for a long time. Once I hit 20 weeks I gained like crazy (at least it felt like it), and was gaining .5-1 lb every week in the third tri. I ended up at 30 lbs, but also had him a few weeks early. With this one I haven't gained anything yet, despite my huge stomach.

Just continue to stay active and eat healthy and I am sure you will gain the right amount for your body. There is not much you can do more than that!

  • Honestly I didn't worry about my weight gain.  I was having  steady weight gain until I had to adjust my diet due to Gestational Diabetes.  I then dropped weight, total gain was 17 lbs.

The most important thing is to make sure that you eat healthy.  Baby will get what baby needs.

  • Thanks everyone!  That definitely helps.  I know everyone is different, but it's nice to know that there are people that are "my type of different!" LOL.  I won't (can't really) starve myself or do anything like that, in fact, I completely avoided MS by eating every couple of hours.  I eat small, frequent meals, all plants (vegan), and my only indulgence has been the daily Luna bar (and on special occasions - a cookie!).  So I am trying to do better than what I did per-pregnancy, which was eat healthy, work-out, and eat a cookie whenever I wanted, and have lightened up on eating the cookies whenever I wanted to (I was in the low 90's).  If anything, I feel like I should lose weight between that and no alcohol!

  • This is truly one area where everyone's body is different.I probably gained 36 or so pounds with DD.  I felt huge, but my doctor was not concerned at all.

Talk with your doctor, relay your concerns.  As your pregnancy progresses, he or she will let you know if there is anything to worry about in your specific situation.  It sounds like you are off to a great start if you already have healthy eating and exercising habits, so keep that up!

  • You're pregnant which means you are going to gain weight. If you are living a healthy lifestyle, my suggestion is to lock away your bathroom scale and pay no attention to the numbers.

  • I'm 4'11" too! :)  I'm a FTM, so I can't really contribute to the discussion, but it sounds like you were pretty healthy before you got pregnant, so is it possible that you may have been slightly underweight and need to add more this go around? I was already pudgy before I got pregnant, and have only gained 2 pounds so far, so we seem to be having different experiences.
