moms of boys stupid question

when you change DSs diaper which way do you lay his penis? I've always sort of pointed it down if that makes sense but lately I'm noticing that the skin around the head looks dry or sticky and seems to be sticking to the head a bit, sorry for the tmi but I'm not sure how else to explain it.

I'm afraid that I'm making it worse or uncomfortable for him. I put a bit of vaseline on it but he doesn't really let me mess with that area. he cries and fights when I try to put vaseline on it which makes me think it bothers him.
I'm wondering if I should be positioning it some other way

We point it down. You might want to mention the fact that it seems uncomfortable to his pediatrician so that (s)he can check for a penile adhesion. DS had a mild one, and since then, I've been really conscientious about kind of pulling back the skin every time I change his diaper.

thanks i will mention it. we had him to a pediatric urologist when he was 5 months and they did separate an area so i try to make sure i pull it back. nothing looks red or irritated but it's probably not bad for the pedi to check it again.

I'd make sure to retract it at least once a day, and make sure and clean it out gently with a washcloth when you do his baths. As for pointing, I don't do that - it just does whatever. We haven't had problems with diapers leaking (knock on wood).

Usually it lays pointing down on its own but I don't make a conscious effort either way. Like PP said, I would have it checked for penile adhesion again. DS has had his skin pushed back by the Dr 3 times and even though I still push it back every night after the bath and use Vaseline, I know the pedi will need to do it again at his 12 month appt. I'm hoping he outgrows this someday!
