Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When to move baby to convertible car seat

So LO is 6 months and 1 week and weighs 18lb 13oz.  We love our car seat but holy moly it is getting SO heavy!! LO is getting a little snug in it and his feet are touching the seat.

I'm hesitant to move him too soon.  Just wanted to check in and see if/when you transitioned LO out of car seat?

Thanks!

Re: When to move baby to convertible car seat

  • Our infant car seat says that DS can't be in it past 22 lbs and our convertible car seat can come out of the reclining position at 22 lbs (reclining in the convertible car seat in my car makes whoever is in the passenger seat have zero leg room), so thats when we'll move him. Hes going in tomorrow to be weighed and at his last appt he was 19.5 lbs and I'm praying that he's 22 lbs or more so that we can move him.

  • Our car seat held up to 22 pounds but Olivia is tall and we moved her to the convertible seat when her feet started to hang over the edge of the infant seat, she was about 18.5 pounds.

I really like our convertible seat, it's an Eddie Bauer.  My parents and ILs have the same seat, it's by Cosco and we all like it a lot, too!

I definitely miss the convenience of the infant carrier when she falls asleep in the car and I have to unbuckle her and carry her inside (she usually wakes up in transit) instead of just popping the seat out of the base and letting her sleep a little longer.

  • Our little guy is 6 1/2 months and 21 pounds. He is 27 1/2 inches long.  We just moved him this week.  The car seat was SO heavy to lug around haha.  The only thing that stinks is now if he falls asleep when we are out running errands, you can't just grab the car seat out :(  But he is so cute in his new convertible seat and thinks he is a big guy :)
  • We switched when DS was about seven months. We are thinking about switching him back though... He still has ten pounds and a whole notch left on his infant seat and I am not crazy about the convertible seat. Plus it really bites when he falls asleep and I have to sit in the car to let him finish his nap or wake him up. The convertible seat is also a lot harder to install so it's a pain when we need to switch cars. We might just switch back to the infant seat until he outgrows it.

  • Whenever you want to, up to the restrictions of the infant seat.

DD2 is 4.5 months old. She's been in a convertible for over a month.

ETA: The only time it would be "too soon" is if she was too small for the convertible which is nearly impossible for a 6-9 month old because the minimum weight is 5 lbs, typically.

yeah, we did this too. Our guy was huge and I'm small so it was super hard to carry him. Since we are FTP we didn't really think past the infant seat. I wish we'd had a convertible all long. We LOVE our Recaro Proride.

    1. It doesn't matter if their legs hang off/out.

    2. Every seat is different, some infant seats top out at 22lbs, some 30, some 35. You need to check your seat.

    3. You can continue to use the infant seat until they outgrow it but just leave it in the car  and not take it in and out (it's not really good for babies to be in carseats all the time anyway).

    4. Most convertibles are good for newborns up.

    5. Don't waste your money on a Safety 1st/Cosco/Eddie Bauer Alpha Omega Elite convertible. Rookie mistake. Hop on over to gear and holler at SuperCuteBenz, the resident car seat tech.
  • We moved LO at a little after 6 months old. He must have a long torso like his dad though, because the straps were fully extended in his infant carseat and it did NOT fit anymore!!

His convertible carseat is just fine for him though and will work for a lot longer now! (: It's super cute, but I did like being able to install his infant so quickly :/ (it's especially nice when/if someone else ever wants to take LO so they can easily take him in the car, it's not so easy anymore)

  • Our son was 4 months old and 20lb when we move him out of his infant seat. He hated it and usually screamed in it when he was in it. So it was great when we moved him to his covertible seat.

Our daughter was 5 months when we moved her and 19lb.

You can't really move a child too soon, as convertible carseats start their weight limit at 5lb.

  • Our car seat goes up to 30 lbs and 32 inches so we will not be moving any time soon. dd is currently 16 lbs and 27 inches. I agree that she is getting heavy. I never carry the carseat. I push it out to the car and anywhere we go!
