2nd Trimester

confused/anxious

I had my anatomy scan last week and was told they couldn't get clear enough pictures of the spine.  They are sending me to a different hospital much farther away.  They got me in in less than a week.  I feel like they saw something was wrong or they wouldn't have sent me somewhere else.  Anyone else have an experience like this?  I'm freaking out a little.

Re: confused/anxious

  • This is our first so I don't have any advice, but you're in our thoughts and prayers! Maybe while you wait for the second appointment you could give your doctor a call and see if you could get any more information?

  • I also have no advise as I'm a FTM too, but I'm sorry, waiting is the worst when you're worried about your baby. I would call my doctor tomorrow and ask all the questions I had. I think it is pretty normal to not think of all your questions at the moment, but then once you're home and thinking through it you come up with a million. Give them a call it may ease your mind a little

  • How far along are you? If the AT scan was done too early, they might not have been able to get a clear enough image.
  • I would not go freaking out just yet (not easy, I know).  If they said they weren't getting a clear enough picture or whatever, I would take them at their word.  If they wsaw something they were concerned about, it's their job to tell you that they are seeing something that they're questioning and need to test further.  I would really think that them telling you they aren't getting a good image of the spine means just that.  Hugs!!

  • Just breath don't work yourself up into a panic until you know all the details. This will do nothing for you or your sweet little baby. If there was something seriously wrong they would have told you and immediately sent you somewhere. I imagine it is probably the fact that you are still pretty early and they were just unable to see everything clearly. I am praying for you and thinking of you. Once again please take my advice and just breath and be positive and everything will work out the right way.
  • maybe that other place has better machines?

  • With my DS, my OB called the day after my ultrasound and said they found cysts on the brain and I needed to have a Level II ultrasound a few weeks later. She told me during that call that everything else looked normal and these cysts are so common that she doesn't even like to have to tell patients about them, but that she is required to disclose any concerns at all. So to the points of the PPs, I would agree that if there was something concerning now they would be obligated to tell you. GL!

I agree with this 100%. They are doctors - they would tell you if something was wrong. It's another opportunity to see your LO :)

  • Did you ask? I would be asking my dr these questions.

  • This happened with DS1, they just couldn't get the proper scans of his spine they needed.

I went a week or two later to the hospital where they have a better machine and they got all the measurements they needed.  He was born completely fine.

I honestly think if they thought something might be wrong your doctor would have told you.  This happens a lot where the baby moves too much and they can't get all the required measurements on some body parts.

Call your doctor and ask what they think as they should have or can a least review the scans they do have and let you know more info on why they need more done.

    Good luck!!

  • Generally, if an anatomy scan requires a followup - be it for an issue or a "double checking"- they'll send you to a place that offers Level 2 scans.  It helps ensure there won't be a similar issue because the equipment is better and leaves less to question.

  • It's really nothing to be too concerned about. They said that with my daughter and it was just that she was laying weird and wasn't cooperating so they couldn't get a clear picture. I had another scan a week later and she was much more cooperative and they got everything they needed except for her palate. So there was a chance it would be cleft and she was totally fine.

Sometimes they just don't want to show off. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the replies.  I feel  a lot better.
  • I know my Dr would have said they were worried about something.  I' m guessing they just needed to send you to get a better US with a more high tech machine to get  a better pic
