I think that shopping at Wal-mart is just feeding the fire that is consuming small town businesses, furthering horrible sweatshop conditions in other countries, and supporting an employer that treats their employees like utter crap just so we can save a few bucks. You'd think a company with 27 BILLION in profits each year could do a little more for the people who work for them.
I hear people argue this all the time. And they refuse to shop at Walmart because of this. However, here's my question to you, and to others that say this...do you shop at Target, Kroger, Publix, KMart, or any other big chain store of any sort? If so, how are they ANY different than Walmart?
I agree with Kristin. Walmart takes the time to teach their employees how to apply for state aid because they refuse to pay more than minimum wage and keep non-management employees below 28 hours a week to avoid providing any benefits.
They also very rarely promote or hire women to management positions. They have had several lawsuits due to this. When women do hold positions of leadership their compensation falls well below those of equal male counterparts.
Wow really? That almost seems illegal. Good thing I don't live anywhere near a Walmart! Target is so much better anyway.
I don't disagree that it's a monopoly and places like this are killing small town businesses. And they probably treat their employees like crap...but you'll find that just about anywhere you go. The argument that gets under my skin though is the "killing small town businesses". I'd say that shopping ANYWHERE that is not a small town business is the cause of it...not just Walmart. That's my only issue with the statement... I have a friend who argues the small town business thing...not treating their employees like crap, or not promoting women, or telling their employees how to get on welfare (which I've never heard)...but she shops at Kroger, Publix, Target. How is shopping at those places not killing a small town business? That's the question I ask.

Ok, that's just weird! Why not wear a longer shirt to cover your butt, or not wear whatever may cause an issue that you'd want to cover it up? LOL
I don't know- I don't wear clothes that would require these- but I do get hot very easily, so wearing two shirts is a no-no for me and they advertise as a 2nd shirt "rides up" & needs to keep being tugged down and these don't.

Check this out, it summarizes most people's complaints pretty well. Most of those other places are better to their employees, at least.
(Note- I realize PBS has an extreme liberal bias. But it was the most concise description I could find)
Not to completely derail the UO thread but I'm with the anti-Wal-Mart movement. Here is anecdotal evidence - my Dad worked FT as an "associate" at K-Mart for 15 years and supported a family of six on his wages with decent healthcare (a very middle of the road plan). My sister worked FT as an "associate" at Wal-Mart for 6 years and when she left she was making $11.00 an hour and payingover $300 a monthforindividualhealthcarecoveragewith a HDHP ($1500deductible) andnoRxcoverageuntilshehitthedeductible. She BROUGHT HOME less than $800 a month and only contributed to her medical plan...no 401(k) or savings plan...And FT meant more than 20 hours...an average week for her was 30 hours - not 40.
Wal-Mart does it because they CAN. I don't know about Target or grocery stores but since WM is the largest public employer in the US I feel like they are directly impacting the number of people living below the poverty line. For these reasons, DH and I haven?t shopped at WM for over 5 years.
Not to start a new debate but the Walmart/health insurance argument bugs me. Walmart employees are not the only employees with crappy insurance. We pay almost $900/month for our coverage through my employer. $5000 deductible and no Rx coverage. If I had individual coverage, it would be over $300/month. We pay $500/month out of pocket for my medication to control my auto-immune disease because we have no Rx coverage and I need to take the medication. I don't make all that much more than your sister. I get it..Walmart sucks. I agree. I don't shop there. But the health insurance issue is much larger than just Walmart.
I think it's easy for someone to be high and mighty about something like Walmart when they live somewhere with plenty of options. For those of us who don't, well... it's not that simple. When I lived in a larger city with lots of places to shop, yes, I avoided Walmart if for no other reason than I'd rather not do my shopping with 500 other people. Now, my options are: go around the corner to the often questionable "hometown" grocery store (which I will do if I need one or two items quickly, and NEVER produce or meat), go around the other corner to Dollar General if it's something I can get there, drive 30 minutes to Walmart, drive at least two hours if I want a Target or anything else, or shop online. I can't drive two hours for groceries or order them online, so guess what? Walmart often wins. Oh well.
My UO is that bald babies are cuter than babies with hair. I could be biased, but I am pretty sure I felt this same way before E was born.
I agree and my boys both had hair... but... 2 year old girls with long hair are cuter than girls with an inch of hair. So I guess it's a double edged sword! My sister barely had any hair at 2 and she always laughs at how silly she looked.
My UO is that I never liked working with women. I had a job at a tv station in college with all men and loved it, then my job after college was in a small office with 3 women and I swear all they did was b!tch and complain about everything. I much prefer working with men, although I have slowly lost all of my male friends outside of a working environment. There just always came that awkward moment where the question of any type of attraction became worrisome. I wish I still had male friends but I am pretty sure DH would have a hard time with me leaving him home with the kids to go have a drink with a guy!

And that's my argument to anyone who doesn't shop at Walmart because "it's killing small town America". I'm not bringing in what they do or don't do to their employees, or how unfair it all is, or sweat shops, or any of that. I hear the argument, A LOT, about Walmart being blamed for the demise of small towns. Yet, these people go and shop at all the other box stores. I just don't see how one is less evil than the other?

Yeah, you can't just not shop Walmart. You have to make a concerted effort to shop locally and at "mom and pop" stores as much as you can. I try and avoid the big box stores, but at this point it is almost unavoidable for certain things (like baby clothes - we just don't have any locally owned retailers around here where I can buy clothes). So, yes, I agree - you can't badmouth Walmart and then shop every other big box store.

My UO is that bald babies are cuter than babies with hair. I could be biased, but I am pretty sure I felt this same way before E was born.
Just a counter-point....umm...have you seen Ava?! That girl's full head of hair is quite possibly the cutest thing I have ever seen! My LO is still pretty bald, thanks to me, who didn't grow real hair until I was 2+, and I think she is cute as a button. But everytime I see pictures of Ava, I smile!
I cringe when people address me as "Mama" or "Little Mama." First, I am 6'0" tall, so definitely not little. Second, I am not your mama. Third, my name is not Jessie Spanno and you are not A.C. Slater.
I can't really think of any other reason for someone to call me Mama, other than C and my husband (when he is talking to C or talking "for" C). Other than that, stop it with the "Mamas"!

This made me laugh! I love Saved by the Bell. In my latin culture, "mama" is used in the same context as darling and sweetheart. I agree that nobody that does not live underneath my roof needs to call me mama, but I like it when my H calls me that. He called me that before we were even married.
I hate Christmas music. all of it. I don't like carols, and I don't like new songs.
Don't pay any attention to my scrooge of a husband. He doesn't like The Aristocats either, so obviously his judgment is impaired some
and the only good Disney movie is Miracle.
Aristocats is pretty good, but Miracle is better! Sorry kle, but hockey trumps a lot of things in my book!
Is there any music in Miracle? It's not on my "Now that's what I call Disney music" CD (Christmas gift from my awesome sister). Which is probably why I'm going to have to go with animated movie instead.

Favority and Kristin: I know y'all weren't judging, it just seems like there have been a lot of posts on this topic lately and I wanted to point out that not everyone has a choice! I will say that most of the employees at my Walmart seem to sincerely like their jobs, but I agree that this is probably not the norm. Kristin, as far as what you said about WM pushing out the mom and pop places, that is absolutely true, not just of WM but all chains (I know this has already been discussed). As far as what was available HERE before WM? I'm not really sure. As you may or may not know, Arkansas is actually where WM originates from, so the stores have been around here for a long, long time. They haven't always been like they are now though... they actually started as five-and-dime type stores.

ETA: sorry, my mom always told us we had a little Romani in our ancestry. IDK how much truth there is to that, but as a result, it just grates on me and I may be a little over-zealous about making sure people know where that term originates from.
I get where you're coming from. But I'm Romanian and nobody in my family is offended by the term "gypped" or even gypsy. We joke about it, even. "How do you start every Romanian recipe? First you steal two eggs.." Maybe our family is unique, but we identify ourselves as having gypsy ancestors and don't get offended.
My UO is that I don't like flowers on headbands that are bigger than the baby's head!

1. Romanian =/= Romani
2. Just because you're not offended does not mean I shouldn't be. See my example - would it have been okay for her to say she feels jewed when she gets an NP instead of an MD? IMO, most people would say no (and if you say yes, I'm not sure we'd be friends IRL), but how is it any different?

If you came to our office you would get Jewed because our MD is Jewish. Ha! Totes kidding...
I roll my eyes at the "s/he deserves a little treat too" excuse that parents throw around to justify things like giving their babies sweets or buying them gifts when they won't remember or really appreciate.
Now, that is NOT to say I don't buy L superfluous gifts and clothes or let her sample my froyo...but those things are really fun for ME. A real treat in her eyes is getting to rip up and gnaw on a Pottery Barn catalog.

Lol, nice, Lawren.
IDK, I've been doing a lot of googling in between meetings today and there is some debate as to the origin of the term. Mirriam Webster does say it probably came from Gypsy, and that's the most reliable source I've found. As I've already stated, I think it's offensive to use a term that basically brands an entire culture as thieves and cheats, but whatever. I'm not the internet police, y'all are free to talk however you want. I'm out.

Christmas music hates you too...so there!
I agree Sooner! Completely!

Dream On - Aerosmith
Boom! If you don't get chills at the end of that movie, then I can't be your friend. USA! USA! USA!
guys, guys. Mulan defeated the ENTIRE HUN ARMY. Much more impressive than a hockey game, c'mon!
Are you a Russian spy?
I'm out.
Actually...by shopping somewhere else you could. I don't have a dog in this fight though because I have several alternatives to Walmart and don't shop there, so I'm just sayin'
