Pregnant after 35

PG>35 Weekly Check-In: Work Woes Edition

Hi, everyone! I have read about people having difficulty working on the computer during pregnancy because of increased back pain and carpal tunnel symptoms. Lucky me, I seem to have both as well as an inflamed right shoulder (my mouse hand!). Since my job involves--you guessed it--typing on a computer all day, this is cramping my style in a big way. Other than trying to take lots of breaks, stretches, and ice packs, is there anything else I can do to make things easier for myself?

But enough about me...on to the check-in!

QOTW: Whether you work at home (being a great mom to your other kids), from home (as a telecommuter/self-employed person), or in an office/business, how have things changed for you as a result of being pregnant? Are your colleagues and supervisors generally understanding? In addition to noticing things you can't do or have trouble doing, is there anything you find you're better at as a result of being pregnant?

Re: PG>35 Weekly Check-In: Work Woes Edition

  • TXBride (Ami) 5/12/2013 here- we found out last week that it's a Boy!

My coworkers have become overtly protective of me. They don't let me lift anything, my boss doesn't want me to go to job sites much, he has a daughter the same age as me who is TTC, so he is being super understanding.

The only thing that would affect my job and hate to do, is to ask for a different shift, if we get inclement weahter, due to nature of my job, I still have to report to work and we go into a 24hrs operation and my shift is midnight to 8 am, I hate to ask someone to swap with me, but I think I will, I don't think I can stay up like that any more!!

  • QOTW: I work remotely/from home, so it's the same old schtick, I'm the same old me. Just really gearing up and making sure everything is organized over the next few months for after I'm out on leave.

Share your updates and vents: Rounding the bend to 24 weeks and it sounds funny, but it's starting to really sink in that I'm pregnant and that this kid has to come OUT! I try not to think about L&D too much b/c I'll be honest- it freaks me out! We have L&D classes scheduled for Jan, I'm hoping that a little education will alleviate some anxiety. :)
  • I changed a lot about my job when I started TTC this time around.  I used to often work from 8:30 am - midnight and I was in gradschool for 4 years of that (I only took one class at a time).  It would have been too much to have a baby with that and DH worked as long if not longer than I did.  I took a quieter job and now I only work 9 hour days with every other Friday off.  Luckily I get the same pay.  Now that I am pregnant, not much has changed since I made all of the changes earlier.  I do have to take off a lot of time from work for doctor appointments.  Everyone in my office has been really helpful and offers to pitch in for me if I need help.  They have told me that nothing has really changed since I got pregnant.

I have carpal tunnel in my hands and my feet.  There is not much that can be done for it.  I take breaks and get up and walk around but that doesn't help much.  I know how you feel.

Updates: I passed my GTT so I am happy about that.  Wednesday, I go to the high risk doctor for the first time.  I am a little nervous about that.  SIL is pregnant too.  She is younger and has had no real complications but she is much more miserable than I am.  When DH talks to her he thinks that I am hiding things from him.  Both my MIL and mother called me last night and I got lectures about overdoing my Christmas preparations from both.  It is nice that they are concerned about me and I think that I am going to back off a little.  I have another family member that is pregnant.  If she doesn't go into labor by the 17th they will induce.  Her doctors expect that her baby will live for about 4 hours.  I am really sad for her but we are not close at all.  I only found out that she was pregnant on facebook.  My family canceled our big Christmas because of it (they also canceled Thanksgiving).  I feel like it is because no one wants to be around me because I get to keep my baby and she doesn't.  I wish at least she would tell me what was wrong with her baby because I have nightmares every time I get an update on her.

In happier news, I got a highchair.  All I need is the car seat and stroller and I will have all of the big things.

  • Hi, I'm Roberta. EDD July 25th

I will try to find the sex of this baby as soon as scientifically possible. FX for a little girl!

Things at work are fairly easy but it's changed in the sense of me not being too focused since becoming pregnant. I'm so sleepy all day! No one knows yet, so they prob think I'm just being extra quiet. I'll have to tell my boss soon since I've got tons of appts. He is a parent and I think he'll be supportive.

  • Hi Danuli8 -

I mostly lurk on this board (I am also AMA), but I wanted to give you some ideas of what to try.  I too used to have big issues with my mousing shoulder until I switched to a Roller Mouse.  I can't tell you how much better I feel without having to reach for my mouse anymore.  https://ergo.contour-design.com/products/rollermouse-pro2?gclid=CPP69ffkkLQCFexAMgodXF8ANA  This thing is life changing!  Takes a couple days to get used to it, but you will feel much better.  It's totally worth the money and much cheaper than having to go to PT.

As for your wrists, make sure they are flat; not bending up your hands so your fingers are above your arms (does that make sense)?  The best way I found is to have my keyboard on a tray that I can angle back so the space bar is higher than the function keys.  Also, if you already have your keyboard on the tray, make sure your mouse is there too while you wait for the life changing roller mouse :)  The less reaching you have to do, the better.

Good luck, ergo stuff is difficult in the best of times.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

Last ditch FET resulted in BFP, and identical twin girls!

  • QOTW:  I haven't come out at work yet, so no changes here.  I work as an engineer, so don't really forsee many changes - except asking for help if I have to move some equipment around.

Updates/Vents:  Had meeting with genetic counselor today and went as expected.  Have a scheduled level 2 ultrasound at 16 weeks with possibility of amnio that day if we decide we want it.  Or the full quad screen if we want that, etc.  Aggravated because DH and I would like to do the Materniti21 test (or something like it) and they are not offering it yet.  Sounds like its available where I live (Phoenix), but also that I need a dr referral for it - so not sure if they would refer me for it since they aren't offering it yet.  I dunno - planning on calling the company that does the test in hope that they may refer me somewhere here that does it - but I'm not sure if I can get it without a dr order.  Maybe I can call my regular ob/gyn for it...really no idea.

  • QOTW:Hmmm, well my boss scheduled a 6:30pm meeting tonite and told me I don't have to stick around for it, for a few minutes I felt guilty but now I'm like screw it I'm totally going home, LOL.

I feel like maybe I'm slightly more driven and less willing to put up with other people's crap. In my mind all I can think is gotta make money for baby and I'll pretty much deal with whatever I need to, to make that happen.

  • That stinks you are having such a rough time with work already.  At my job we can get an ergonomic evaluation if we are having issues as you described and they will adjust and/or replace our chair and keyboard, phone etc. to help with this.  Maybe that is something you could look into.

QOTW:  Nothing has really changed for me yet.  I'm a paralegal so I'm in an office and pretty much work at my own pace.  I have a great boss and co-workers that will be happy to help if I need it later on I'm sure.  And no nothing has gotten better being pregnant haha.  I am more tired, more forgetful and generally less motivated to work.  Maternity leave cannot come soon enough!

Updates: today I had a level 2 u/s because they couldn't get all the needed pictures during my a/s.  Everything looked great according to the sonographer so it was nice to get that out of the way.  But boy I got so nauseous during the scan.  I had to keep turning to my side to keep from puking or passing out.  Apparently this is normal but it was no fun.

  •   "Other than trying to take lots of breaks, stretches, and ice packs, is there anything else I can do to make things easier for myself?"

I slept with a brace and that seemed to help a lot.  Near the end I had to wear a brace all the time.  Luckily I have only had a mild case this time around but I'm not on my computer near as much.  Good luck!

It is hard for me to stand for a long period of time and bend down.  Luckily I am a SAHM right  now so the only thing it has put a damper on is my OCD cleaning routine.  I have had to tone it down and realize that it's okay if some stuff doesn't get done right away.  I have been cleaning the house and doing other cores in shifts.  As far as dealing with DS...I guess I am probably a bit more tired than usual but overall I feel like I have been doing a good job keeping him entertained when he's home.

  • Carpal tunnel is a huge worry for me-- I already have a bit of it from my fibro, and we do a lot of repetitive turning and twisting in my job. And lots of bad ergonomics, too, that are unavoidable-- the computers in the room are not adjustable and are mounted at all sorts of heights and angles, if a patient is remotely large we have to reach over them to log roll them so you can't keep your arms close to your body, etc. I don't think the majority of the charge nurses are considering my being pregnant when they give me assignments-- but maybe some of them are? I can't tell and nobody's said anything to me either way.

QOTW: Work basically sucks. It's a long shift and I don't sleep well because I'm a light sleeper and getting up to pee 3 times a night means I spend hours lying awake trying to fall back to sleep. And I can't get comfortable because I'm already having problems breathing if I lie on my back and I can't stand MH's hot breath if he's facing me and I lie on my side facing him, but that leaves me only one side and my arm starts to fall asleep if I stay on that side all the time. (I know, can I have some cheese with my whine?) At work, only some of my coworkers are remotely helpful and others will accept help but make themselves unavailable if you need it. I basically dread going to work every shift. But I need the money and the banked time off for when the baby comes.

Nothing is better at work for being pregnant-- other than every so often, it makes a cranky patient less cranky with me and gives them something positive to talk to me about instead of focusing on how miserable they are. If they're not vented and sedated, of course! LOL

I just can't wait for this baby to arrive-- I'm not a patient person and I'm not one of those women for whom pregnancy is a breeze. My house is nowhere near ready for this baby to show up, but I want to meet this nugget already!

(I guess my QOTW was also my vent!)

  • Michele, I congratulated you at the top of last week's PG>35 check-in and took you off the DD list because you gave birth. I'd be glad to keep you on the monthly congrats list, but the due date seems not quite so relevant any more...I didn't mean to erase your existence, but since you have already given birth, the due date list seems an odd place to put you. No offense intended, and I am very happy for you!

Abeille, due 7/28/13, don't know sex but will be finding out

I used to deal with mild carpal tunnel when I did a lot of computer work and switching to a trackball vs a mouse really helped me.

QOTW: I am a SAHM to an energetic nearly 3yo.  Fatigue and nausea have pretty much made me no fun as a mom for the moment.  My husband has been great when he's home...I got a lot of rest over the weekend.  Today I called my Dr and got a prescription for Zofran and it helped tremendously.  I am friends with a lot of other 1st time moms who are now becoming 2nd time moms and they are further along then I am so I have an idea what's in store for me in the coming months.  My daughter has started going to a program for her age a few days a week at the same school that will be her preschool...this gives me time to rest and go to doctors appoints.

  • QOTW:  It's difficult for me to answer this question without sounding very negative, so I apologize in advance, I am not normally like this.  I haven't told anyone at work about the pregnancy yet, and I really want to wait as long as possible. However, I will probably tell my boss by the end of this month because I'll have to start going to the OB during the day, and I think it will be easier if he knows why I keep needing doctor's appointments.  He has a lot going on right now so I don't really like to bother him with anything personal unless I absolutely have to.

I am not anticipating anything getting easier or getting any special kind of treatment from anyone, especially from the women I work with, so the less people that know for longer, the better.

I work for a professional sports team, so it's very male oriented (but respectful), however, the very few women who I work with are single, not remotely interested in children, and very engrossed in their jobs. And we are not friends, not even a little bit.  It's very strange.

At all of my previous jobs I have had great relationships and long-lasting friendships, so this is a little hard to swallow, but I'm pretty much used to it by now. I don't love it, but I'm used to it.

Hopefully I am underestimating everyone and it won't be so bad.

Ok, so now that the negative part is done (I warned you it would be :) I'll move on to the fun part!

Updates:  No news since last week, but we are going in for our u/s tomorrow morning and are hoping to see 2 strongly beating heartbeats. We are very excited about it this, and DH has been talking to both babies in my belly all week.  2 years ago I am sure he would have been completely freaked out by twins, but now he is thrilled.

I had my first bout of nausea yesterday morning, when i caught a whiff of one of my cat's breath. Yikes, it was not a good smell and my stomach did not appreciate it :)

TTC since 3/2010. Me 41, DH-49. After 3 years, 6 IUIs and several IVFs we have finally have our beautiful baby girl, born on 11/7/13.

  • I haven't told work yet.  I'm in the middle of changing companies and waiting for an opportune time to tell my new employer.  Otherwise, work is OK.  I sit at a computer for hours on end so, I worry about carpal tunnel.  I get it now and then as is, and I'm afraid it'll get worse.

Otherwise, I'm doing fine.  The baby is growing as expected and my RE and OB are happy with how things look.  I had my last RE appointment today :(  I'll miss him.  The small subchorionic bleed that had been present on all my previous ultrasounds appears to have resolved. YAY!  Next stop, OB appt next week where we talk about either the blood tests for chromosomal abnormalities or CVS/amnio. I think she has to refer me to MFM, which is the same guy my RE mentioned, so that makes me feel better about who I'm going to.  I think today, I feel like I can start thinking that I really am pregnant.  I'll still worry, but I'm starting to think I can be excited.

  • QOTW:  Work is good.  I'm a nurse butI do not do bedside nursing, which I am thankful for right now.  I work in a central intake area for community nursing and I love it.  My job is mainly done with typing and over the phone....I find I'm a little more emotional, we deal with a lot of palliative patients and their families and now that chirstmas is creeping up, I am finding it emotionally draining.  My work has been fantastic though, everyone is super excited for us, which is nice, because this is #3......

Rant:  Have a horrible head/chest cold right now.  I am taking a couple of days off work to get over it, but of course, we are in the thick of christmas concerts and such with my older two, so I really just feel like I've been hit by a truck.....but on a good note, one more week until my ultrasound and we get to see this little one!!!!!

Michele, I congratulated you at the top of last week's PG>35 check-in and took you off the DD list because you gave birth. I'd be glad to keep you on the monthly congrats list, but the due date seems not quite so relevant any more...I didn't mean to erase your existence, but since you have already given birth, the due date list seems an odd place to put you. No offense intended, and I am very happy for you!

Sorry I guess I missed it last week.  Even if I gave birth already I am still hear to see what is going on with all you ladies still baking LO's.

I did my internship in hand therapy and worked with a lot of patients with carpal tunnel issues.  What everyone said is good advice: breaks, ice, roller ball mouse, making sure  your keyboard and mouse are placed right so you're not extending/flexing your wrists too much will help, wearing a brace when you're not working will help to keep your wrist in neutral and take strain off the nerve.  Also wanted to add sitting with your feet flat (whether it's on the floor or using a telephone book) and hips at 90 degrees will take strain off your back.  Sorry you're dealing with this!  I hope you can find some relief.

QOTW: I'm an OT and work in a school district with the little kids with special needs so I am definitely feeling it as my pregnancy progresses.  I quickly get out of breath running around with them and it's getting harder to get up from the floor nowadays! My co-workers have been such a huge blessing taking on my more challenging kids with behavior issues.

Updates: I have my appointment with the specialist tomorrow. I always love these appointments because we get a more detailed u/s but they make me anxious too because it seems like something always comes up.

  • Hi ladies! We found out a few weeks ago that we are having a boy! He is healthy  and already keeps me up at night kicking for hours, I feel so happy he is growing well. I go in for P17 shot #6 tomorrow, so far no cervical changes, but I get pain and contractions towards the end of every week before the shot. I've also developed some pretty ugly doctor/nurse/clinic anxiety...and am not sure how to get the office to be more compassionate.

I don't post as much as I read, because I read on my phone and its hard to respond. I'm going to try and write more!

Work is so hard right now. We are a small business, engineering firm, and I am the Program Manager- we've had work, but no line of credit to fund getting the work done so we can get the contracts paid! It is so hard ordering parts and materials day to day, having no money to support the company and getting hand written checks every other week. I've been here 2.5 years, but still feel like moving on would be hard right now, at almost 6 months pregnant.

Other vents...my other kids are doing so well, but so busy! Health appts, school concerts, sports, friends, two bdays in Jan; omg my DH and I are so exhausted. On top of that, we are buying our first home together, closing at the end of January. Thankfully the kids won't change schools and the payment is exactly what we have been paying in rent. I guess my only actual complaint is how lonely I feel when we accomplish everything we need to do each week and don't have the time to tell anyone about it!

Thanks for reading, and I know its a late post, but any advice would be most appreciated!

  • hey folks, don't want to be a downer here, but please take me off the list. About a week ago I was officially diagnosed with a missed m/c, and prescribed cytotec to complete it.  I'm out for now. I'm doing ok, but hanging out mostly on the miscarriage/loss board for now. I'm sure I'll be back on TTC >35 at some point soon, but it's too early for me to think about right now.

Wishing all of you happy & healthy 9 mos and I hope to be back.

I'm so sorry! The Miscarriage/PL board was super helpful for me. Best wishes to you as you heal and hope you are back here in no time at all.

Update: 8 weeks to go and im having a boy. ive started listening to my hypnobirthing cd again because I believe it worked wonderfully last time.

QOTW: Im a stay at home mum now but worked during my last 2 pregnancies. My bosses were very understanding. i find being home with a 3yo and a 1yo alot harder than working some days. i miss work friendships though and this time around feel much more isolated.
